So, did political discussion get banned or something? I came on to see what's up after the election, but... nothing! Banned, or all resident whackos too shocked (or relieved - depending on your direction of wackiness ;-) to write?
Your visiting left-wing whacko,
Dan

Hi Dan--
There most definitely WAS/IS a ban on political discussion here.
A broohaha developed and the moderators put their foot down.
It was stated that Lymenet was for those suffering lyme disease, and other sites are for political discussion....I think that's appropriate myself.
Good to see you back Posted by heiwalove (Member # 6467) on :
i think it's pretty ridiculous that political discussion has been banned here, considering this is, after all, 'off topic' (and i quote 'topics that have nothing to do with lyme disease'). and of course, it could be argued that the political climate in the US (and elsewhere, for that matter) has EVERYTHING to do with our access to proper healthcare and LLMDs' freedom to adequately diagnose and treat chronic lyme.
anyway, hi dan, and we can have our own little left-wing wacko post-election celebration.
(which is to say, woohoo! and finally!!!! (except for the fact that america still hates gay people and immigrants. but hey, gotta start somewhere, right? okay, i'm censored.. i mean DONE now, please don't ban me) )

popreecosh!
banning discussion it is unconstitutionl, after all. (oh, yea - the constitution only applies if it is in agreement with the individual in 'power's' point of view. , nowadays)
how 'bout those elections?
even the fixed voting machines didn't hold the line. at the very least we know, a vote for change was overwhelming.
what interesting times are these.
i miss shoprat.

Hi, Dan, Between the too-little-time-too-much-to-do syndrome and the fact that , apparently, enough folks did enough thinkin' to overwhelm most of the attempted election-rigging, this time around, the need for debate seemed a bit less critical... Also, the 2004 phenomenon tired some of us out!-- I can't quite figure it out, either!... ... But there's still plenty of rotten stuff going on! I promise I'll be back with some remarks.... , as they say.... DaveS

One other thing-- I will say- there is no question that the political discussion here on lymenet off-topic greatly speeded my recovery! Debate is one of the best exercises for the mind we can engage ourselves in, and, efforts to alleviate the suffering of others takes the mind off one's own suffering. I wish everybody a quick return to wellness! DaveS

Well, Mo, it's only unconstitutional for the government (and certain quasi-governmental situations) to infringe on freedom of speech, so if Lymenet wanted to ban the use of the word "banana" it could.
Meg, good to see you still around and paying attention I am interested to hear what you think of all that's gone down in the past year...
Dave - you're still Dave, aren't you? I can't disagree with what you have to say...
and Heather... now you just broke the rule, didn't you? Don't you know all good citizens follow the rules?
But really, I didn't want to stir things up and get anyone in trouble - unless... where is that lab rat anyway?

I feel better now. No, really!

I sure don't miss it, it had turned into partisan political blogging which was getting nobody nowhere, (unless you like rancorous squabbling)
David (of the previous post) and I were trying to talk about self-built houses, I once tried to bring up the subject of biofuels, and everything was almost always dragged into the arena of political crap or bumped off the top by the cut and paste zealots.
Sooner or later you will all realize that after a couple of terms in office, politicians become crooks anyway, probably out of necessity.
when everybody agrees with me we'll be on our way to Charlieland... Posted by meg (Member # 22) on :
Same with me, I feel better and I don't miss it!

Charlie,
I agree also. Although I enjoyed the banter at times, it took time away from my real interest in LymeNet - providing help to my daughter.
I would appreciate maps of Charlieland if you have them available. However, I'd like to petition you to please change the name of the land - I went to "Charlie-land" in the '60s. Too many people shooting at us, it wasn't all that pleasant.

funny how we're all back talking about not talking about it.
never-the-less, things have played out over the past year in a grim yet fascinatingly bizzare fashion. i can see why some folks don't feel like talking about that. still, it is what it is. what's more important is what we are all DOING about it.
( banana. )

Mo,
quote:i can see why some folks don't feel like talking about it.
I still feel like expressing my political views and I believe others share my feelings. I just don't think LymeNet is the right forum in which to pontificate those views.
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Sincerely,
LymeDad

i dunno.
this is 'off-topic' by definition: that which has nothing to do with Lyme disease.
i agree that topic threads/posts, at times, got out of bounds as far as LymeNet flash rules are concerned, but never agreed that that was on account of content, but was on account of individual conduct..
afterall, there are many hotly debated medical issues that memebrs have similar issues to deal with re: appropriate communication of differing views.
rife, hbot, herbal treatments, remember when the IHCT debate was hot and heavy? if you recall, some folks have seriously broken flash rules regarding medical content. i don't recall that that that necessitated banning of medical discussion.
like Dave and other members have said - for some of us - healthy debate is theraputic. it is a way to excercise the effected centers of our brains, an opprtunity here among Lyme survivors.
in this day, current events are as much a part of our daily lives as anything else. discussion of such has been historically active on this board for years.
it's not as tho one can exist in america today without having a number of 'political' and legislative isues on their minds, and a need to work out our thoughts and concerns regarding the same.
besides - those not feeling up to the discussion have the clear choice not to engage.

WOW! I really missed alot last year. I was curious about the politic stuff too when i came on last week. I am just happy to say i had absolutely nothing to do with the ban. Posted by just don (Member # 1129) on :
I DO agree that the political bantering really doesnt belong in the 'lymenet' family. There are forums for such items.
I just miss giving somebody like our recently deceased 38th president due credit for the great man he was. Funny how alot of his qualities arent widely known till after he passes away!!!
Back when he was first 'given' the role of the presidency I always"thought" there was an inside deal between the former pres and the new one,as a trade off deal for resigning,,,knowing about he was going to get the presidental pardon.
NOW I come to find out that isnt how it was at all,,,that it was done for the GOOD of the country with no strings. It really DID promote the healing of the country at that time!!!!
And I guess even he got a kick out of the joke of being the bumbling stumbling idiot that Dana Carvy and others made him out to be!!!Simply NOT true at ALL!!! How do we know he didnt have lyme and resulting balance problems, or inner ear infections???

Mo/Danq/CarelessDave, etc.
You all might want to consider starting a group chat room at Yahoo.com
You could limit the membership to those with interest in politics as they relate to Lyme disease.
Or in your case Mo, maybe just limit it to those that lean a little left, (just joking - NOT)

ah .. but such an interesting stagnation of events this past year. how ironical.
who can really say the governing of our country is so far outside our respective realities?
do we not live with it -- everyday.. lyme or no lyme?
those who have supported the Bush administration and those who have not share common concerns and core values.
i still believe it is for no better reason than pride that some do not wish to share an open dialogue regarding the state of our nation.
is it not human welfare that counts above all else?
to me -- it's like a replay of the falling of the statue of saddam. now we hear what a turning point this is. yet, one is easily left wondering why such a monster was propped up by the US not so long ago.
i agree with one thing, the spin is getting old. hordes upon hordes of innocents dead, and for what?
don't bother answering, at this point, it's clearly rhetorical.

ya know? I am involved into politics to the point of holding political office and i really dont think it belongs here. The only political stuff that should be talked about is drafts of political bills and who may help you get the bills passed. With holding office I have discovered you need both sides of the isle to get things like this passed. Sooooo, that my 2cents worth.

politics belongs nowhere.
interest in our welfare and the common good belong EVERYWHERE.
