Sizzled, you seem in the know about our 4 legged friends.Anyone else too with advise?
What would you use to prevent the ticks from biting the horses.
Our sun is so intense here and my friend says the spot treatments will fry their skin.Big time blisters.
Would the ole sprays and such and general grooming be enough?
Any tips to help? The ticks are in full force this year.2 bites and very worried.Do you give them abx. for bites?Bites got a little big, filled w/ fluid?
Thanks to all that can help.

Hey,3greatkids, I am sad to hear how bad the ticks are where you are.
This is what I have tried in the past and find no to few ticks on the ponies.
I use Mycodex Shampoo (tick and flea shampoo for CATS and dogs) especially on their legs and tails and manes.
I use a horse fly spray that says it is intended to kill ticks.
I keep the grass around the turnouts short and use critter-proof fencing to keep animals out (as well as possible).
Keep them out of wet fields.
Shampooing a horse frequently is NOT recommended.
I also use a marigold-natural- horse fly spray and spray the brushes when grooming them.
*sigh*
Do the best you can. ALOT of animals where I live are getting sick and even the vets are stumped because the tests don't always show positive (I know! I know! )
Good turnout with grass, clean water and stress-free exercising....healthy living!

Thanks Sizzled.
We are doing the best we can.Mycodex,I use to use that stuff all the time w/ the doggies.Giving our cats a bath.......All you know what will break loose.
I guess keeping the grooming at a full steam ahead is in order. The horses get great attention,LOTS of lovin and fun stuff,so,low stress for sure.Fun is the name of the game.No pressure for the blue ribbons here.
I'll get some marigold spray today.Think I'll get some for my yard.I live inside the city limits, lots of concrete, but still ticks.I think all this mulch being shipped into these yards is making the ticks hop along.
Well,brush ,brush,brush I go.
