I had this problem like a year or two and somehow it went away on it's own. I supsect this will be the case again this year.

I see these little flies that look red when you smoosh them. It's so small and pretty quick when you try to swat them. Anyway they seem to love the mirror in my bathroom.

What is the source? I have no food in my bathroom. No rice heating pads, etc. I clean it like crazy. I even bleached the tub and scrubbed the tiles. I just poured half a bottle of Draino in the tub. Maybe there is some standing water in the drain so I am hoping that will help it.

They fly around the kitchen a bit but don't seem to congregate there. We took out the trash and there's nothing open sitting on the counter. All our crackers/flours, etc are put in tupperwares. No fruit sitting out, no plants!

Grr. I hate this. Feel like I'm living in filth but really I am a clean freak.

I can try the whole apple cider in a beer bottle with soap on the edge trick but just curious to see if I can figure out the source of all this?

I can't help you figure out the source, but I want to mention 2 things:

1) Draino is very bad for your pipes.

2) A blacklight bug trap would quickly get rid of all those flies. I can leave rotting fruits out on my kitchen counter, and I still don't have a fruit fly problem! They all get stuck in my trap like a gypsy's tent.

I get those too!! Usually only in the summer. I blame them on having bananas or plums in the house. (in the kitchen) Not sure if that is the source.

I hate those things!!! I'm a clean freak too, so they drive me nuts!

They are finally disappearing. Maybe the culprit was a beer bottle that was left out on the counter overnight. Don't worry, I didn't drink it - my BF did! So now we rinse out everything with soap before we put in the trash.

Paranoid but whatever!

I did eat a plum a week or so ago so that prob attracted them too. But why do they love the bathroom? So weird!

Right.. I think they come from the grocery store. I think they like the bathroom because of the moisture... but you would think they'd just stay in the kitchen!

They love moisture and do lay eggs in the drains at night time so I close my drains at night when I see them around. I also set fruitfly traps on the counters which consists of a cereal bowl filled with old fruit and a little bit of water in the bottom of it. Then I cover the bowl with tight saran wrap and then make little holes with a sharp knife in the middle of the bowl not on the outside edges because once the flys go through the center holes they get trapped and march around the edges. After I have left it out for 24 hours and have caught them I put them in the freezer to freeze and that will kill them. Then I dispose of them in the trash and NO MORE fruit flys. Some times I have to leave out new batches of trips just incase there were some smart ones who didn't fall for my first series of traps. The fruit flys lay eggs on the fruit while on the tree or vine and that is why we get them in our homes. I hope that this is helpful.
