I have an old Compaq Presario, (Its one of the first 'black box towers',,,when they first came out) When I talk to my server about problems they always say its your OLD computer,,,buy a new one. After they see what I have,,,they say,,my,what a great puter,,,keep it at all costs.
When new I had like 48 megs of Ram(whatever that is) (I am lucky to know where the "A" key is!!) Then after getting real frustrated with performance I added 96 or 100,whatever, megs additional Ram and it helped so much with performance you couldnt believe it was the same computer.
Our country slow dial up runs usually about 46-48 K but sometimes as slow as 30K if there are ALOT of users at once. (Like late afternoons,when the other peoples school kids come home)
My question "IS" if a little is good is more 'wonderful'?? Will I see a great benefit from adding alot more??since remaining--just don--

will not help dial up unless you have aol.
aol is memory intensive and runs very slow on old computeres and slower on new computers.
added ram with cost almost nothing you can add 516mg for $29 DOLLARS ON SALE.
pop open the case a put it in very simple. may have to remove old memory.
will amke program come up faster and run faster since they rumn in ram memory. the cpu is the ultimate test of speed.

Don are you sure the '48 megs of Ram' is right? Anyway...you have to check to see how much your computer can expand, too. I have an old Sony that will only go up to 512 but my current goes up to 2 gig.
My dad has a 126 RAM and he has trouble pulling up many web pages - that is why your RAM seems a little low - even with the 100 number.
As stymielymie said - RAM is cheap and very easy to put in. However, you need to look to see how many slots your memory is plugged into and what your computer can expand to.
Having said that - probably won't help your dialup situation.
