It appears that lymenet has been attacked by a bit of a nasty bug. We keep getting error pages. A page that looked like windows but was not popped up on my screen. It was trying to install software to erase porn off my computer "for my protection." Thanks but no thanks. Lucky I was able to post this. See you all when it gets sorted out. Be well. Miss you.

bejoy, thanks for posting! this happened to me today after i posted on 1 of forums. glad i got it stopped so it wasn't DOWNLOADING something else! you can't hesitate on this one; it starts almost immediately.
i haven't been able to get on here 3 nights straight now plus during the day. i was going to post about that, but this solves some of the mysteries!
yesterday, there were at least 5 trolls in a row signing up and being discovered by moderators; 10 in 24 hr. period...give or take! disgusting! Posted by klutzo (Member # 5701) on :
bejoy, That official looking so-called porn eraser was a major virus. I got the same message, but my Norton Anti-Virus caught it, interrupted it and denied it access, and I chose to have Norton delete it. It took several minutes, so it must have been a bad one.

I'm doomed. I fell for it! Exactly like Bejoy said. I was asked if I wanted to clean 984 porn sites from my computer-I gave it the green light! I inherited this computer so I don't know hwere the previous owners have been. It all seemed plausible to me. Now what-wish I was more computer savy. I'll try to see if I have an antivirus program on here. Now it all makes sense. Hmmm there's a sucker born every minute! Posted by BZ (Member # 8801) on :
I had the same problem...dont remember no porn eraser, but it completly shut down my computor..had to take it to the pc doc to fix it!! its bad what ever it is!!!

Hmmmm...
Major virus attack AND 5 trolls within 24 hours? Co-incidence? Doesn't seem that way to me.
The question is why are we being attacked? The only reason I can come up with is that we are closer to the truth than they are.

A bit easier on a mac- it just asked if I wanted to download the entire PHP file.
ummm, no

Norton must have blocked mine; I have it set to block any scripts. I just kept getting a blank page -- when I got anything at ALL!

Oh boy, major problems. Whenever I ry to log on, it says that I don't have computer access and shuts down my web.
arrgghhhh;, what do i do???? This has been happending for about 3-5 days.
Posted by Squeegee (Member # 7219) on :
I got the blank page just like Michelle. I wasn't sure if it was my Norton Internet Security blocking it or because I use Firefox as a browser, which doesn't use Active X controls.
At any rate, I agree that the trolls/site hacking situation does not seem to be a coincidence.

You guys without virus protection....You can download AVG online for free. I upgraded and paid $39 for mine.
No problems that I've noticed....just couldn't get on very often, and when I did I couldn't post.

AVG - Ad Aware- Spy Bot Search and Destroy
I have exactly the same...works great!
Trueblue....Yes...thanks for posting the link!

Anytime! I'm with Cobby... it's it's free it's for me!
I have the adaware on mine but not the bot destroy thing, though.
I also have a tiny personal firewall. But think AVG might have a a better one for free. I wasn't aware of it when I was in a panic when my firewall died.
So far things seem to be working alright. *crosses finger; knocks wood*

Keep in mind the old trolls are back in circulation here too.. ones who have a number of posts now in a number of names.
They lay low and skirt right under the radar here and there.. then appear again when they want to try to kick butt. Some have been using names here for a long while.
Just so ya know.

Yup, t'is true!!! Re trolls-!!!
I got the error pages too-!!!!!!!!
You know, driving up to Sac for the LDAC with two relatively recent LYmies in my car I was amazed that they had NEVER heard of Edward McSweegan PhD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it really hit me how crazy the troll paranoia may seem to newbies- so newbies- real ones*)!-
...Once upon a time there was an NIH employee who was supposed to help Lymies but who hated the LDF... and he spent a great deal of time, an amazing amount of time, doing BAD stuff for Lyme patients instead- his name- Edward McSweegan...
When the following article came out, it was quite clear to many of us who had been making up many name on many groups writing for hours a day- besides the hateful stuff he did openly-
"There's nothing to do. There's nothing to pretend to do," laments Dr. Edward McSweegan.
McSweegan once managed a large portfolio of research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), but his work days have been pretty much empty since March 1996.
It's not that he doesn't want to work. He says they won't let him. Meantime, taxpayers are covering his generous paycheck, reports CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.
McSweegan, who earns about $100,000 a year, believes he's being punished for using his personal time to discredit a charity that had influence over his bosses at NIH.
Back in 1995, McSweegan and other scientists felt the charity was putting out unscientific and incorrect information about Lyme Disease, and he used his personal time to discredit the charity.
In 1997, the NIH suspended McSweegan for two weeks, partly because he had referred to the charity as "whacko" on his personal Web site. But documents show that NIH's own lawyers agreed there were no grounds to fire him. The charity later sued McSweegan for slander, but lost. McSweegan won his counter-suit against them.
Before the feud, McSweegan received the highest rating possible in his annual job reviews and was awarded annual cash bonuses for his good job performance. His personnel file is full of commendation letters from his bosses. Even after the feud--including his most recent job review--McSweegan's bosses have continued to give him good job performance scores.
CBS News wanted to talk to McSweegan's bosses, but NIH denied a request. A spokesman did say that allegations that some employees don't have enough work to do are "to be expected" in any giant agency. NIH employs 18,000 people. The spokesman also suggested that the same might be true at CBS. This correspondent pointed out that taxpayers don't pay CBS salaries.
So what does McSweegan do all day?
"I've managed to publish a couple of books, some short story fiction, a little bit of non-fiction writing," he said.
Yes, with all that free time, and with taxpayers footing the bill, he's become a successful mystery writer. And more: "I wound up joining a health club near the office, just to sort of to break up the day," he said
Oddly enough, McSweegan has been getting good job reviews.
"I guess I'm good at doing nothing," he said.
CBS News showed McSweegan's interview to Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, whose Finance Committee played a role in doubling NIH's budget over the last five years to a whopping $27 billion.
And now Grassley wants action. He has fired off a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson demanding that McSweegan be put back to work.
After making it clear that the CBS News investigation raised questions about NIH's use of taxpayer money, Grassley said: "Dr. McSweegan wants to work - I expect HHS/NIH to find him appropriate work that makes good use of his experience and talents."
His letter included this rebuke: "The fault for this lies in great part with NIH management. I request that NIH take immediate steps to ensure that all NIH employees are fully employed and are helping to achieve the goals of the organization. To come rattling a tin cup asking for more money when the NIH is paying for full-time novelists has got to stop."
Some might call Edward McSweegan lucky. But McSweegan said he just wants to expose the kind of waste that gives federal bureaucracy a bad name. Even if -- after all these years of doing nothing -- he gets fired for telling about it.
Talking about this in public is sort of like playing Russian roulette, McSweegan said. "You pull the trigger and see what happens."
He might title his own incredible story "Under Worked and Overpaid." For now, he's waiting for someone else to write the last chapter.

I just looked at my results for my AVG software. It intercepted a bunch of viruses. When I was able to get on lymenet yesterday, I would get a "pop up blocked" warning.
I often look at the names of the new people signing up. Some that are suspicious are old actors/actress names that most folk wouldn't remember like "Dorothy Malone". Pahhleeez. Or, some obvious ones like "drdrdrdrugs" Yeah, no one would suspect YOU.

When is NIH going to realize they shouldn't hire sociopaths that stalk patients and troll on internet forums? That's where the bugs are coming from. Hope the webmasters have tracking programs to catch the perpetrators.
Posted by bettyg (Member # 6147) on :
that was sickening that IOWA'S SEN. CHUCK GRASSLEY GOT HIM HIS JOB BACK! No wonder he won't co-sponsor any LYME bills to date since he's also the chair of HEALTH committee.
I listened to NIH on cable in the last 2 nights about getting all this ADDITIONAL TRILLION $$$!
1 sen. showed what they got in the 1990's to now!
nationwide, we have employed 37,000 scientists! ***********************************************
listed to the allergy/infectious disease director talk off/on that night but nothing mentioned about lyme disease during the 1.5 hrs. i listened. Posted by Jenifer (Member # 697) on :
Sorry everyone for this inconvenience! I was away from my computer most this week and didn't realize this was happening.
