I had a free trial of Norton for virus protection.

I have been looking for alternatives. NOt ready to pay $50 for virus protection at this point although I know it is a good idea.

The other alternatives I looked at where free but also too confusing for me to be able to install them at this time.

perhaps when my brain is working better.

Just curious what you all are using for virus protection.

I have a cable service for connection and then go to the aol web site to connect to lymenet, etc.

I believe aol has virus protection.

But, I do play scrabble through the cable connection.

And sometimes go to fox fire to access some sites I can't seem to get to through AOL...even lymenet at times.

Got the free services from Kim Komando site and doing a search.

Can't recall what they are now.

kam,

my virus protection expired too, and since i have windows 98; not much available to me.

i use SPY BOT; look down thru pages 1-3 here; i know it's been mentioned before! i have too many windows open, and it won't let me go in and copy the link, or i would have provided, and i'm getting ready to shut down until late tonight when i return.

if you don't have anything by then, please PM me, and i'll get you the site before i open the MAX windows again! [Big Grin]

In my opinion paying ongoing subscription fees for virus and spyware protection is a scam.

You might consider using the AVG free virus scanner:

And for spyware protection, the free Microsoft Windows Defender application:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

And as mentioned above, SpyBot Search & Destroy is a comprehensive spyware/adware/malware scanning utility:

I agree wtih sweetpea and also recommend avast. It's been really effective and takes up so much less space than Norton.

In fact, once I put avast on my desktop, I was so impressed I uninstalled norton on the laptop and downloaded avast instead.

It's sleek, effective, well-reviewed and free (though I did send them a donation).

OK I downloaded the free AVG and that is working well.

I also downloaded the microsoft one...I think.

And when I am using AOL, i think they have their own protection source.

But, still confused regarding whether I have it all covered.
