Paramus, New Jersey May 2008 ─ The national Lyme Disease Association announces a forum at the Bergen County Community College, May 29. The forum will feature speakers who will delve into the Lyme disease controversy focusing on various aspects of the disease: the science surrounding the controversy from science writer/author Pamela Weintraub who will reveal new information, Attorney Elliot Pollack who has defended some of the premier Lyme treating physicians against charges related to long term treatment, and Dr. Joseph Burrascano, whose own private journey has led him through the clinical, political, legal, and research aspects of the disease.

The announcement by Attorney General of Connecticut Richard Blumenthal that he has reached a settlement with the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) has put a spotlight on the problems of chronic Lyme disease patients and their inability to get treatment. This is primarily due to the IDSA Lyme Disease Treatment Guidelines which recommend against all chronic Lyme disease treatment with antibiotics, alternative treatments and even supplements and against discretion for physicians. Mr. Blumenthal has now said these Guidelines must be re examined in a more public way by panelists with no conflicts of interest. Hear from those with extensive experience in the Lyme disease controversy.

Attorney Elliott Pollack is current Counsel for Dr. Charles Ray Jones and former Counsel for another Lyme treating physician in defending Connecticut Department of Health actions against the Doctors related to Lyme disease treatment. Attorney Pollack will discuss the legal & political issues surrounding Lyme disease and how they impact treating doctors and patients. He is a member of Pullman & Comley, LLC, Hartford, Connecticut.

Author Pamela Weintraub, an editor at Discover Magazine, New York, is featured in her first public discussion about her book, Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic, to be released June 19 by St. Martin's Press. The book, a narrative history of the Lyme experience and a deconstruction of the science and politics, discloses the research of some major players in the Lyme war and includes surprising, and to some perhaps shocking, revelations from researchers who have been behind the effort to debunk chronic Lyme disease. Patients, advocates, treating physicians, and other scientists are also interviewed and the reader will gain insight into living with Lyme as portrayed through the examples of several "Lyme families." At the forum, she will discuss the book, difficulties pulling the information together in a meaningful fashion, her thoughts as to how her work can impact the current Lyme disease crises, and the future direction see sees for Lyme disease. Cure Unknown will be available at the event for signing and purchase with profits going to LDA toward research.

Also featured will be Dr. Joseph Burrascano, Jr., one of the most notable physicians to treat Lyme disease patients. His treatment philosophies have inspired physicians worldwide to search for new methodologies to treat chronic patients. Now retired from private practice, Dr. Burrascano will share his insights from over 20 years of treating chronic Lyme disease patients, his on-going data base project which is amassing clinical data never before compiled, and what he sees as the future of Lyme treatment based on current research and his data base. Dr. Burrascano will touch upon what he sees as his immediate role in Lyme disease.

ABOUT LYME DISEASE New Jersey ranks third in CDC reported Lyme case numbers nationwide (behind contiguous New York and Pennsylvania) and also has one of the highest incidences in the country for babesiosis, a malaria-like illness transmitted by the same deer tick that transmits Lyme disease. The deer tick is now joined in the region by the more fast and aggressive Lone Star tick which is spreading STARI (Southern tick-associated rash illness), a Lyme-like disease with no viable test, and also other diseases.
Many New Jerseyans currently suffer from co-infections, more than one tick-borne disease at the same time. Additional tick-borne diseases prevalent in NJ and the Northeast include anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, tick paralysis and tick-borne Bartonella. Often people are unaware they have Lyme disease, since they may be misdiagnosed with MS, ALS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, lupus, Alzheimer's and sometimes, even autism.

ABOUT THE LYME DISEASE ASSOCIATION (LDA): --The Lyme Disease Association (LDA) is a NJ-based national volunteer nonprofit that devotes ninety-eight percent of its funds to programs--funding research, education, prevention and patient support. LDA-has funded research projects coast to coast─some of which have been published in peer review including JAMA, Neurology, Infection, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Recognizing that the ability to find solutions involves a multi-disciplinary effort, the LDA has partnered with businesses, patient groups, celebrities, government, and the medical community to unlock the secrets of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. LDA and Time for Lyme, its Connecticut affiliate, raised funds and collaborated with Columbia University to open an endowed Lyme disease research center there in New York in 2007. LDA also has a fund for children with no insurance initiated by internationally acclaimed author Amy Tan. Additionally, LDA is working to support HR 741 (Smith NJ-4) in the US House of Representatives Health Subcommittee and S-1708 (Dodd CT) in the Senate HELP Committee. I plan on being there. It's a bit of a drive as it's all the way up the Parkway (around exit 160 if I remember right), but at least I won't be stuck in the traffic heading South during rush hour.

There's a link on the LDA website now that has a schedule for the forum and some more details. I think it was just added as I don't remember seeing it when I checked the site last week.
