bad news: dr. buck refuses to do a left hip replacement operatation on me on me due to my lyme, fibro, and countless other issues; he's uncomfortable with my many issues! [cussing]

it totally blew me away today; i wasn't expecting this at all. saw him 13 minutes only.

i did tell him also about his co-worker who gave me the DO NOTHING cortisone shot in hip, and me not seeing eye to eye; and about his lying to me that he didn't do hip surgeries. [tsk]

i also gave him 1 page of instruction coming from the fibromyalgia web site on elective surgery: things to do to make it easier on fibro patient.

when he refused to do this and i was totally in shock; yes, it does happen occasionally! [Smile]
i asked if it was because of my comments i made about co-worker and his refusing to open my chart to read about what meds i was on etc.

told him i'd been on 20 RX meds early in year plus the 22 supplements added in july, and it's too hard to remember what i'm on. NO.

he just didn't feel comfortable knowing all these risks; "i could lose my eyesight, etc." and the flare-up of my lyme spirochetes and fibro.....

he recommended mayo clinic or iowa city since they both have fibro/lyme experts there!

boy, he got a quick earful of NO, they do NOT have CHRONIC LYME LITERATE MDS THERE! "how can you say that about mayo clinic"?

I've not been there due to talking to over 100 people who've gone there for both and weren't correctly diagnosed, put on proper treatments, etc "

he was really perturbed then, but i didn't care; i was trying to educate him, but his mind was closed about this no. 1 mayo clinic!

so i asked about des moines; iowa city/mayo clinic are both out for hubby; he can't travel and his essential tremers would be much worse than they are now.

yes, he named 4 drs. there; i wrote them down and asked for phone nos. preferrably 1-800 nos.

i was really disappointed and told him this, but he said he turns perhaps 2-3 cases per year down! i did thank him and shook his hand.
next week, i'll write him a thank you for his HONESTY!

IOWANS, i need your help please .

have any of you had hip replaement surgery done ?

4 names given to me for des moines:

GOETZ; MAHONEY, MATHIS, VITLETOC

where?
by who? would you recommend your surgeon
satisfied?
complications?

of those having surgery, any of you DIABETES 2 with SLEEP APNEA too?!

i went today to schedule time after waiting 2 months to see him! i wasn't prepared for this at all!!! i live 5 minutes from clinic and hospital so BIG DISAPPOINTMENT for me. [confused]

Betty, I am soooo sorry to hear what youre going through! Its so unfair.

Here you are on Lymenet helping other people everyday, and then you cant get the help you need.

I dont understand kharma. I wonder if it would help if all of us Lymees asked our llmds if they know a Dr that would do your hip surgery??

What do they expect you to do, just suffer?

AHHH!! Im so mad right now. I hope that somebody somewhere will be able to help you!!!

You have to admit that your case is daunting to any surgeon. Maybe you should be just a little easier on the next surgeon you talk to.

Maybe you could just hand him/her a simple list of your other problems and sit back and let the doctor ask you about them.

Then they will have been informed and you will have that documented.

You are not going to get a Lyme knowledgeable surgeon, so you are going to have to make the best of it. The people knowledgeable about Fibromyalgia will probably be the closest you will get.

I do hope you get the best doctor and the best results.

lisa and ann,

thank you both for your comments above.

yes, lisa, it's quite a switch for me helping so many others, and now i need help and can't get it!

ann, i could see it also on his face when he sat down. then when he was going to look at my hip, i asked him to turn off the overhead lights due to my extreme eye sensitivity; he flipped out! he had a window providing enough light to do what he needed to.

i'm praying to God on this one to point me in the right direction; i can NOT continue going on like i've been for many months now. [Mad]

Betty,

Prayers and healing energy for you today. I am so sorry you have having to deal with this. Having been a "fibro patient" for more than 10 years, I learned to downplay some of my symptoms

when I needed help from a specialist. Otherwise, their eyes would glaze over and I would be tuned out.

I did the "please turn out the florescent lights" request the last time I saw my sleep study doc. Also complained about the sleep study room where

I was supposed to sleep, with florescent lighting or pitch black room. Anyway, I have come to know that I can expect to expect the unexpected (WHAT??)when seeing most doctors.

The two times I saw a neurologist I was in tears most of the sessions. This guy didn't even shave yet and he was emphatically telling me that I didn't need some tests because they cost too much.

I have a Medicare HMO and that was guiding his treatment entirely. I DID have the tests done and when they were negative, he had the most awful "I told you so" attitude. Reason for crying

the second time. He was VERY uncomfortable and confused with my tears. Anyway, although you were expecting that this surgeon would be focused

on hip replacement, he was probably thinking that you have too many other problems and he didn't want to risk getting in trouble with those he doesn't understand. Hard way to find out his

limitations but good thing you did before anyone handed HIM a knife!

Love to you,
Janet

Have you tried asking organizations of people that contain the age group usually involved in joint replacements: older folks. Maybe a local AARP chapter or some such thing might be a resource. Or your church, if you are a member somewhere. Sometimes word of mouth is the best way to get a good doc, just like in lyme.

BETTY, I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR PROBLEMS. DOCTORS ARE GETTING MORE AFRAID OF PEOPLE WITH LYME THAN EVER. THEY ARE NOT BEING EDUCATED OR EDUCATING THEMSELVES ABOUT THIS DISEASE. I JUST WISH THEY WOULD VISIT LYMENET.ORG, AS IT IS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD SO MANY EXPERIENCES WITH THIS HORRIBLE DISEASE.

I AM AT HOME TODAY, SO SLEEPY AND TIRED THAT I AM NON-FUNCTIONAL. I NEED TO GO TO THE GROCERY STORE AND THE DRUG STORE, AND I JUST KEEP PUTTING IT OFF.

I ALSO HAVE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, AND HAVE A FLARE UP RIGHT NOW, SO I AM TIRED ON TOP OF TIRED.

I HOPE YOU CAN FIND SOMEONE TO GIVE YOU A SECOND OPINION ABOUT YOUR HIP REPLACEMENT. I KNOW A LOT OF US ARE PRAYING FOR YOU. [group hug]

SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE KNOCKING MYSELF IN THE HEAD, OR BETTER YET, KNOCKING THE DOCTORS IN THE HEAD! [bonk] I WISH I COULD FIND A DOCTOR WHO HAS HAD LYME DISEASE. NO ONE, INCLUDING DOCTORS KNOWS WHAT WE GO THROUGH, UNLESS THEY HAVE HAD THIS DREADED DISEASE.

THE MAIN THING I TELL PEOPLE, IS, IF THEY FIND A TICK ON THEIR BODY, SAVE IT. THAT WAY IT CAN BE TESTED, SINCE THE DOCTORS DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE OUR TESTS, EVEN WHEN THEY ARE POSITIVE. THEY ARE IN FEAR OF BEING SUED OR LOSING THEIR LICENSE. THEY JUST TELL US WE SHOULD SEE A PSCHOLOGIST. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO NEED TO SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST. THEY HAVE NO SENSE OF COMPASSION. I JUST WANT A DOCTOR TO TREAT ME AND MAKE ME FEEL BETTER. IT IS JUST SO FRUSTRATING, AND NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. [confused]

ALL WE CAN DO IS KEEP PRAYING FOR EACH OTHER.

i promised you an update; so here it is! [Smile]

good news hopefully for me! today, i called mercy hospital about a hip pain seminar i read about in sun. DM register. i thought it was a surgeon talking! had receptionist transfer me to those in charge of actual program.

zoe, rn/coordinator of hip/knee pain seminars, etc. said they had many hip surgeons there.

told her my specific main illnesses/risk, and asked if they had operated on others like me w/my main illnessesl YES many!

she wouldn't give me any drs. names but said after this 1 hr. session this week, they would make available OPENINGS next week of hip surgeons for a consultation.

she gave me the 2 names of ortho centers and phone nos.

i called one, iowa ortho center; they have 3 hip surgeons. i explained to their rn ELAINE my situation, and asked if she'd check w/3 docs if any would take my case & HAD DONE surgery on someone like me. i was asked to call 2 pm.

so called back 2 pm, elaine had talked to 1 dr. mathis' pa, dr. asst.. pa wanted to know if i was rejected due to hip or illnesses; illnesses.

we need you to bring medical records w/you.
asked specifically due to my huge file:

last complete physical notes;
ortho surgeon's notes where he declined to do your surgery;
surprised they didn't want more!
so we set up next opening, 3 wks., jan. 30, 230 pm! EARLIEST APPT.

they would not make any guarantees to perform surgery without physically looking at me.

mathis was 1 of 4 drs my local surgeon gave me! so that was very promising.

so please put me in your thoughts and prayers for all afternoon jan. 30! betty

ps - if bad roads/weather, i'll cancel and reschedule. [Big Grin]

Dear Bettyg,

I am sending you my positive thoughts and prayers and asking God to lead you to the best doctor to help you.

I am sorry that you are having such great difficulty finding the right surgeon, but I think it is better to find one who can take in the "big" picture and not just snapshots.

God has a reason for everything. Remember that He is sending you somewhere else for a reason.

It is hard sometimes to appreciate that. It always makes me think about my kids making me five minutes late for something and then seeing a car accident that I could have been involved with had I been on time.

Sending you prayers and positive thoughts.

Betty, if anyone's capable of cutting through the red tape around here, it's YOU! Way to go! As Ms. Geneal wisely points out, there's usually a reason why we're blocked from certain paths while others open up.

Sending good thoughts your way to make it happen!

Betty,
I am thrilled to hear your news and have many hopes that this turns out to be exactly what you need!

Sounds as if the "brains" will be joined together at the conference and so you may have your pick. So glad you already have an appt. Please keep us

up-to-date about situation. Once you have hip replacement you will need lots of support and rehab. Is that available to you? I know of a couple

of women who had hip replacements who went to a residential rehab facility for two months and were so glad they were able to do so. They healed

and were able to go home with a new measure of mobility afterwards. Many prayers going up for you today! Blessings, Janet [kiss]

geneal, deep-hearted don, michelle, ann, and janet,

thank you ALL for your uplifting notes above; they were much appreciated! i feel the weight of the world is off my shoulders for now.

i called them again this morning asking if they needed to view my hip xray; yes; so requested i get it on CD and bring to session.

i asked to be put on their PM cancellation; but they don't do it that way. they have a 1st come-1st call in that morning to see if anyone canceled at last minute THAT DAY! they're not required to give a 24 hr. notice.

geneal, "God has a reason for everything. Remember that He is sending you somewhere else for a reason." thanks for reminding me of this geneal and michelle!

don, thank you so much for well wishes; i continue keeping your daughter/you in my thoughts/prayers too!

ann, yes, i'm "very self-reliant" [Big Grin] [Wink] , and couldn't believe that god provided guidance sun. am for me with our DM newspaper with the add nice, big, and eye-catching! i'm so glad i called and talked to the person in charge of the seminar, zoe!

Plus with her giving me 2 phone nos., i only had to call the 1st and got 2 of 4 names rejecting surgeon gave me! yes, there was a plan.

then to talk to 1 of surgical rn's was a blessing for her to ask them giving them my HIGH RISK illnesses so they knew up-front what they were getting into IF THEY DECIDE TO DO SURGERY ON ME!

michelle, yes, i love cutting red tape and getting down to the guts level fast!

janet, yes, i have 3 really close classmate friends where we get together monthly to eat out, play a belly-laughing movie, and just talk giving each other support when needed.

we have lots of physical therapy areas locally and 5 minutes from me.

god bless you all for your warm, sincere wishes that jan. 30 will be a BIG 10-4! [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

Congrats Betty, I hope this one will work out for you and is capable and positive about the surgery.

I hadn't posted to this, not being in Iowa, and all.

My mom has had 2 hip replacements and one knee. (See's darned near bionic now.) But she had great recoveries from both hip surgeries. She may, or may not, have Lyme but has other medical problems and sailed through unbelievably well.

May your experience be the same.

When she had the first surgery done her first remark after getting home was, "Boy, I should have done this a long time ago!" She was blown away at the pain really being gone.

I'm keeping fingers and toes crossed for you. Good luck!

trueblue, thanks so much for telling me about your mom's POSITIVE experiences.

my main WISH IS "NO MORE PAIN" EVER IN THAT AREA of trying to get up/down/bending again.

i'm hoping that it is smooth sailing since i've had to fight for everything the last 37 years of my unknown chronic lyme.

are you feeling better now true? hope so!

Hey Betty,

I'm just north of you in IA. We've talked before. I haven't been on the board for awhile due to my Dad's health.

It sounds like you are on to something now.

Many wonderful people have changed our world but weren't recognized until they were gone from this life.

You are educating the arrogant, a tough job indeed. You are bold and wonderful. I'm praying for you.

true, glad you have a good day; it takes me up to 1 wk. to put away clean laundry; no energy!

BUG, i sure do remember all the wonderful emails we've had. so sorry to learn of your dad being so ill! i remember you have lots of family in iowa and near me too!

thank you for the many compliments my friend, bug! yep; i'm BOLD! bold on the outside; very quiet inside actually!

yes, i constantly try to educate and when i write my thank you to local surgeon turning me down, i'm going to ask that he go to 1 of places, blood lab, where i left 35 copies of the HOT PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT w/conn. attorney general article and ALL other OUTSTANDING articles including doc wisebutt!

IF HE READS with an OPEN mind, a little of what i was telling him the other day MAY SINK IN HOPEFULLY!

ALL PRAYERS ACCEPTED; will be reciprocated by me when you need it. BUG, your dad is now in my prayer chain of folks.

bug, hang in there; it's not easy but take the time to tell your dad how much he means and what he/your mom have taught you during your lifetime.

my last memory of dad, his finally saying in ENGLISH, I LOVE YOU! he'd use the NORWEGIAN words on his nurses/those helping him but not mom, and us 5 kids!

THAT was a huge accomplishment! so just after the nurse pronounced dead, i kissed his forehead telling him i love you back in norwegian!
