Ok, a while back someone posted about certain classes of ssri's and antibiotics competeing for receptors in the liver...

I can't recall, but wasn't the upshot of it that certain abx can actually cause an increase in the effectiveness/dosage of certain ssri's?

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, can you link me to it, please? My sister is just starting abx and I know that she's on some sort of antidepressant already.

Thanks!

Hi,

The SSRI's can compete with the P450 cytochrome receptors in the liver causing increased levels of medications.

Biaxin cannot be taken with the SSRI's as it will increase the level of the Lexapro (or other SSRI's that uses similiar pathways).

Ketec also was not recommended to be taken with the SSRI's because of the P 450 system.

Zithromax has not been researched to see what pathway it utilizes in the liver, but Pfizer did their own study with Zithromax and Zoloft.

Zithromax was shown to increase the level of the Zoloft by 40%. Zithromax does utilize the P 450 ststem so caution should be used as with the other macrolides.

I do not have the link but if you google in Flockhart P 450 system drug interactions...........you should get several hits.

The SSRI's also should be used with caution with Dificuan, Xanax, Valium,Risperdal, haladol and Tagamet and many cold medications. These are all spelled out in the list.

I know in the past there were links if the search engine is working.
