i remember whole bags of cherry blasters sourkids doing something. (the ingredient is tartaric acid i think.) don't remember what it did for my breath but my tongue was nice and natural pink-read with no white except maybe where the acid missed. it was a bit sore, but i liked seeing my tongue looking healthy. the main reason i don't keep eating them is that it is rare that i go after candy (im a pure starch and extremely hot spice, not sugar, addict.) i also want to take advantage of any lack of glycemic craving i can muster. (my ridiculous constant starch cravings are bad enough.) and plus corner store candies are gross, why am i even talking about this?

anything that works as well? mouthwash doesn't do it, and i don't really have a doctor that believes in common non-localized systemic yeast warranting medication (and i am also fairly skeptical,) and i don't know if i want to load on another med anyway.

Hi,

these are the things I've been using, and seem to be working:

Hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash.

Oil Pulling
http://www.oilpulling.com/

clotrimazole troche (persciption lozenges)

I would stay away from sugars, since yeast grow on sugar.

You can also open a powdered acidophilus pill
and pour it on to your tongue and brush your tongue!!!!!!!

Hi Danielb,

Here's what been helping keep my thrush at bay since I started doing it.

Gargle with mouthwash. Brush. Use a tongue scraper. Then I use a hard bristled toothbrush to scape the back of my tongue(can't get the tondue scaper all the way in the back...it makes me gag.

Then rinse really well.

* TO make sure I don't re-contaminate every time I brush-Very important to turn my toothbrush's upside down in alcohol> people use different things but this is what I use...If you are on flagel or tinnie use something else. I rinse them well before my next use-and also change the alcohol freqeuntly.

It is soooooooo important whenever I brush my teeth or use any mouthwash to open a capsule of apho & sprinkle it on my tongue.-....make sure I have rinsed well before I put the apho on my tongue. Any remaining mouth wash remaining could kill the delicate apho I sprinkle on my tongue.

When I brush my teeth & use mouthwash ect... it kills everything-the good flora & the bad...this leaves an "epmty field" for the yeast to move into. This is why it is very important to sprinkle some apho on my tongue to replace the good flora.

Since I have used the above things I have not gotton thrush anymore.

Hope this helps
Blessing [Smile]
Dana

Swish a 1:1 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water around your mouth for 30 seconds (or as long as you can stand it).

hi Doomer

Its short for aphodophillus-a pro-biotic. Can get it in any vitamin store or on-line Vitamin store. I like to use kyro-dophillus because it has no flavor-they are small caps & it has a high aphodophillus content.

I can't spell very well that why I used the apho abbreviation.

No sugars, fruit. Brushing/Flossing, cleaning tongue well. Swishing probiotics in mouth.

The most effective things I've found for whatever's been lurking in my mouth and causing bad breath, is taking either part of an andrographis tablet, or some olive leaf extract, and putting it between my cheek and gums, and sleeping like that at night.

I've been doing that for the last few nights and it's made more of a difference than anything. I can't say for sure 'yeast' was the primary pathogen, whatever so long as it goes away.

Also, depending on what the odor is, zinc may help. Zinc prevents oral pathogens from forming scatole, which is a disgustingly named chemical responsible for a common mouth odor. It also kind of 'coats' the mouth. Zinc gluconate is good

(I use a Zinc by TwinLab, gluconate dihydrate, zinc picolinate, it's $3-something on iherb)

Good luck.

Dana-
need clarification of your routine.

1. Gargle with mouthwash

2. brush your teeth

3. scrape tongue

4. open capsule of aphodolpholis and sprinkle on
tongue

Is that correct? As far as sprinkling the apho on tongue, you just leave it on your tongue and get on with your day?

Daniel....You're eating candy to get rid of yeast?????? [confused]

If you have yeast in your mouth, then trust me, you have it all the way down. You will not be able to get well if this continues.

Be careful with Nystatin, as the liquid contains sugar and the troches often do as well.

The home remedies listed above might work better.

Acidophilus is what dana was talking about. Wish there was a good abbreviation for it!! I don't think "acid" would be a good one!! [Wink]

yes buggedbylyme that pretty much my routine. I can't get the tongue scaper all the way in the back of my tongue so I use a firm toothbrush to scape the back of my tongue. Make sure to rinse really well & open a capsule of apho on your tongue. Swish it around & you're good to go.

I often repeat this again during the day too & again at night. It doesn't hurt to open apho on your tongue as many times durning the day if you want. The apho is good for you.

My preventive method will not kill a bad thrush infection but it has gone a long way for preventing them for me.

And like the others said-try not to eat suagr.

Blessings [Smile]

Brushing my teeth with stevia concentrate seems to help a bunch. In fact I've been using it since September and at my latest dental cleaning, there was significant improvement in my gums.

But in the interest of full disclosure (I never make my ideas sound too good to be true!) there is a down side... my mouth is so sweet, fruit flies (another problem in our house) sometimes are found flying around my head. Really! [Razz]

Not all Nystatin contains sugar!
There are many different brands.
Swish and swallow it with water, it is not absorbed and stays in your GI system. No sugar at all people!

Theralac has kept my mouth in the best condition while on abx. Before I tried it, I was always having mouth problems and trying different things. I used to open the acidophilus, use hydrogen peroxide, garlic, grapefruit seed extract etc. (not all at once!)

But with the Theralac, after the first month of everyday use, (just swallowing--not breaking them open) I now just take two a week and am fine. (I am now on ketek and omnicef) Theralac is a bit expensive, compared to some other probiotics, but for me it is worth it. I just wish I had known about it when I was on flagyl!!

Best wishes.

Ann

Whoa- andrographis dissolving in your mouth?? Isn't it just insanely bitter?

Andrographis kills bacteria of various kinds, spirochetes, fungi, viruses, and parasites, so I'd guess that if you can tolerate the taste, it would kill just about any foreign pathogen that's causing your oral problems. you might not have any taste buds left at the end, but your mouth would be pretty sterile.

offtopic, but interesting:

Andrographis has been shown to kill gum disease bacteria (which by the way is also a spirochete, and is possibly implicated in some cases of Alzheimers (they've found it on autopsies) when it leaves the gums and spirals it's way into the brain!). There's supposedly a European andrographis oral gel for killing those bacteria- I'd love to get hold of some for gum issues, provided it's not a prescription-for-extreme-cases sort of thing.

I can't wait till I have a dentist appointment in a couple of months, very curious what andrographis intake is doing to my gums. Antibiotics were great for them- at my last dentist appointment they showed me that while on antibiotics (6 months) I actually reversed all the (relatively minor) gum disease damage I had, I hope the andrographis keeps the same kind of improvement up.
