My 2 year old grandson has just started having facial tics in the form of blinking one eye.

I was reading up on this and found that once again magnesium can be a problem. I also found out that there are many things that contribute to mag depletion.

Certain vitamins, I don't know which ones deplete mag. Wheat apparently depletes mag, didn't know that.

What other stuff might we try to avoid to prevent further magnesium depletion?

Ethanol. Melatonin...the list goes on.

Mg has MANY, MANY functions. It is dropping, spiraling downward, because so much is being used for its many functions.

Every enzyme, every hormone, every protein (including our own antibodies) need Mg to be made.

We need Mg-ATP to control the conversion of ATP -> ADP by raising cAMP. It INactivates PFK...the rate controlling enzyme for glycolysis. Bb is "PFK dependent". And believe me..we are "stuck" in the glycolysis (low levels of ATP) if we have lyme.

Go here (just skim it and you will be blown away):

Marnie, it is so nice that you still have so much faith in our mental capacity here. Skim it? Right......what's "6CO2 + 6H2O + 18ATP + 12HADH C6H2O6 + 18ADP + 18Pi + 12NAD + 6O2" [confused]

I was hoping to skim it, but not a chance. That's skimming material for you? You are so lucky [Cool]

Do you have anything more at the first grade level for me that maybe just lists what basic foods and supplements we might want to avoid? A chart would be nice, like the food pyramid [bonk]

I'm trying to grasp this chemistry myself.

One thing I can tell you is that a chocolate deficiency will deplete magnesium. [Smile]

(In other words, those low on magnesium often crave chocolate.)

Curious -- does anyone know why malic acid and mg works? Instead of just mg?

Years ago, we all tried 200mg malic acid and mg, and the energy boost was astonishing.

When I said skim, I was hoping you would "catch" some information you could understand like:

"4. The physical integrity of the DNA helix appears to be dependent on Mg2+

a. Mg2+ ion decreases the number DNA replication errors b.

Mg2+ ion stimulates DNA repair "

thus see that Mg helps prevent DNA damage and stimulates DNA repair...

ETC.

Don't get hung up on what you don't understand. Find the facts that you can grasp. Cut and paste and drop the link into an MS word file. Then print it out. Highlight what you DO understand.

It will become clear!

Malic acid chelates Al...aluminum...which competes with Mg for binding.

Need to have B6 to either absorb or use magnesium -- I forget which it is.

Stomach acid is needed to absorb all minerals. Diarrhea depletes many minerals.

Mg works WITH B6.

Yes... stomach acids are very much needed to breakdown food to "feed" the beneficial bacteria in our gut as well as "feed" us (absorb the nutrients in the foods).

Mg is needed to make all enzymes...including digestive enzymes!

We don't want our stomach to be too alkaline at mealtime. When food hits our mouths, the stomach acids start to increase.

Some persons even say don't drink any liquid (that might dilute the stomach acids) with meals. They believe we should wait awhile. Obviously, we would have to chew our food very well before swallowing, so we don't choke!

Others disgree, saying we need to drink mineral water with meals:

http://www.mgwater.com/benefits.shtml

I like Pure Life by Nestle (avail. at Wally Mart). Do NOT get the flavored kind...just the pure water with minerals.

If Mg levels are horribly low, one might need to take digestive enzymes before meals to help out.

Easy to understand website re: Mg/Ca and how to increase Mg levels using FOODS...and why Mg is low (sugar and ethanol/alcohol):

http://www.mgwater.com/calmagab.shtml

Lactoferrin increases the #s of the beneficial bacteria too.
