I've got 2 cats and 1 dog who are in need of some preventative flea treatment. Normally I use 'advantage' drops on them both but my supply has run down and I'm thinking there might be something better out there.

I've heard cats can get a needle which lasts up to 6 months and that 'Revolution' is a good brand for dogs. I'm not sure if that's a pill or drop.

What does everyone use and is it safe/effective IYO?

I've been pleased with Frontline Plus for my two dogs. You have to apply it to the back of their necks monthly.

I am a vet tech and I suggest Frontline for cats (unless indoors only then advantage would be fine)

The best product for dogs is K9 Advantix. Apply every 3 weeks in heavy tick season.

any q's feel free to ask.,

Hi MerryGirl,

Why K9Advantix over Frontline Plus? Is it better prevention for ticks?

I'd love for you to elaborate because, clearly, I want to take the best preventive measures to keep ticks and fleas off my dogs and OUT OF MY HOUSE!

I live in Southeast FL, my dogs' don't interact with other dogs but do spend time in the backyard so any details would be MUCH appreciated.

Gratefully,

Hi Clarissa.

Advantix is better because it paralyzes the tick BEFORE it can bite within minuutes of contact on the dog.

Frontline ca take up to two days to kill the ticks and they can bite and feed on the dog before dying.

My dogs are negative for Lyme and I believe that this is because of the Advantix.

Advantix is not safe for cats.

If you have specific Q's please ask.

K9 Advantix can be bought at your vets office. It goes by how much your dog weighs. Apply the advantix every three weeks during heavy tick season. Advantix is about $17 a dose. Well worth it though.

I agree about Advantix. I tried everything out there for my dog, and thus far, it works the best for the tick problem. I wish I'd have tried it sooner, but I was too busy trying things that didn't work!!! [Wink]

MerryGirl,

I can't thank you, enough! I will definitely purchase. So far so good with the dogs'...I just had them tested for Lyme, Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and they were negative.

Still wtg to hear about Bart & Babs (which I did through Fry). The vet also did their Babs test.

Bummer that I just bought Frontline BUT maybe they'll be happy to exchange it as it's unused and I just bought it last week.

Thanks again! Wish my own vet had known this but she's very well-versed, in general, and I guess that's why we have Lymenet.

Your very welcome.

Some vets have "relationships" with certain companies and get certain products cheaper because of that. I know this for a fact that a large animal hospital chain tells clients to use frontline even though Advantix is better.,

It is because they get it cheaper and make more $$$. Sad huh?

K9 Advantix severly burned my dog. Be very careful if you use this product.

K9 Advantix can cause side effects.

My hint is that apply in very small spots down the back and under the ear.

If something happens to your dog call the co and they will pay the vet bills.

For the record I have no connection to this company, and I dont make money off the product.

MerryGirl:

That "severely burn" thing scared me.

Is it in a tube like frontline, apply to neck (and you said back of ears)? Why would it have burned the dog?

What side effects should I be aware of and are they any worse than the "poison" in Frontline?

Sorry for so many questions but my pets are my life! [kiss]

Triforce
New and Better product-- need something that kills the ticks and fleas as I have found that ticks still get on animals with frontline/advantix and then jump off once they get in your house !@!!!!

I would say that Advantix can cause skin irritation. I would say it is more common than Frontline, but also pretty rare. I am not too sure of the statistics but it is not very often. It can also happen with frontline.

here is a link. On the right hand side there is a video..it has ticks in it...very gross.

Never had any such problems with my dog while on Advantix. I wasn't aware that "skin burning" was even a possibility. He doesn't like anything moist rubbed on him, and will try to rub it off; however, I've never noticed any skin irritation or problems he was experiencing.

I watched the K9 Advantix video that Merrygirl posted just now. I watched the whole video, and from my observation, yes, the Advantix treated dog did have "no ticks" in the treated area. but, what I did also see was that, the ticks crawled away!!!!????

If that is the case, where did they crawl to? If the dog was an inside/outside dog, and treated with Advantix, had crawling ticks on it, they came across the treated Advantix area, did they just go running across the dog's fur, and JUMP OFF?

If that's the case, as it looked per the Advantix video, then I would definitely choose Frontline. At least with Frontline, the ticks do attach (ugh, I know, worst thought in the world to me) but then they feed, and DIE!!!!!. Frontline Plus lists killing the tick eggs as also an action of the medication, so that to me, is the safest route to go, if you have to treat with ANYTHING.

You know that the ticks will be around, probably hopping on dog/cat for a meal, but when they do, they feed, then die. Die. That's right, if I were to use Advantix, they would just scatter, repeled by the Advantix, perhaps drop off into carpeting, bedding (mine?) and then BITE ME!!!

Just a thought.

Supposedly the ticks become paralyzed and fall die and fall off. I have seen a video of this happening,

you have to do what you are comfortable with.
