Can anyone recommend a natural iron supplement which I can buy at the health food store to replace 'Ferro-Sequels", recommended by my son's LLMD?
Btw - son is almost an adult. His iron level was very slightly under the minimum reference range level.
I don't like what I'm reading on the product package. The ingredients are as follow:
Lactose, Microcystalline Cellulose, Docusate Sodium, Magnesium Stearate, Hydroxypropyl Methycellulose, Polyethylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, Silicon Dioxide, FD&C Blue No.1 Lake, FD&C Yellow No.5 Lake, Carnauba Wax. Contains FD&C Yellow 5 Lake -Tartrazine as a color additive.
This product contains 160 mg of Ferrous Fumerate which delivers 50 mg of elemental Iron.

- STINGING NETTLE is fabulous to help restore iron levels. Sure worked for me, several different times.
FLORADIX, too. I've used both when at my worst to get back up to speed - and then just Stinging Nettle to maintain. The lab tests proved my efforts successful, several different times.
I stopped taking it (several times) when I should have stayed with it for maintenance, though, I also had untreated Babesia.
As I'm sure both you (and your son's LLMD knows) BABESIA is known to cause anemia.
I'm glad to see you are so wise as to recognize the awful additives in that list above. Sigh. But we have choices, thank goodness. -

FLORADIX - Ferrous Gluconate with plant based vitamins
(Be sure to see the "use by" detail even though it's kept in the fridge. It must be used within a certain time frame after opening. Many natural foods and vitamin stores carry this.) -

- Your son might also consider gluten intolerance as that can prevent nutrient absorption. Here's a current thread posted by LymeToo:

I like Blood Builder by Metagenics. Floradix is good, but I'm intolerant to something in it, but it is a good product.

Digestive enzymes with HCl in them may also improve iron absorption. Also, taking Vitamin C with iron supplements or iron-rich foods can improve iron absorption.

I am using Iron Extra by Vitanica. It is a sublingual tablet and contains Vit C, Folate, B12, Iron, Yellow dock root, Dandelion root and Nettles.
This product is supposed to promote healthy iron stores and enhanced absorption with a gentle form of Iron and C.
Best wishes.

I take OptiFerinC by Pure Encapsulations. Works fine and is inexpensive. Blood Builder is also a good one as Six mentioned.

- With Irish ancestry, I recall about 12-14 years ago being tested for a genetic (something) that could make me more susceptiple to a certain kind of anemia.
Obviously, I did not have that marker or I'd know more about it. Something about lacking a key enzyme (?) to absorb nutients that prevent anemia (of which there can be different kinds. B-12 / Iron are different by may have some common connector regarding deficiencies).
From a basic search, this phrase sounds familiar: " impaired absorption of vitamin B-12 because of a lack of intrinsic factor (IF)"
The Irish, though, are not the only ethic group to have a certain marker along this line, though some other ethic markers may be different.
I assume the doctor has done a good job figuring out WHY your son is deficient. There could be many reasons. -

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Sorry I wasn't able to respond quickly. I have been ill for several days with a nasty head cold!
Keebler - my son had Babesiosis several years ago, Thank God, it came up negative two times on the FISH test after treatment with Mepron & Artemisinin.
My son's iron level is very slightly below the minimum range, so his LLMD wants to get it to where it should be.
