Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE). Has anyone seen or know of someone who contracted TBE in the U.S.? I found the CDC link for the 5 US travelers, but no info on infections in US.

Thanks in advance.

TBE is probably ehrlichia, which is common (symptoms are similar). I've had it, and I'm sure many lyme patients have had it as well (ehrlichia).

No, not ehrlichia. Tick-borne encephalitis is caused by a virus, carried by the same tick that carries lyme. Not in U.S. as far as we know, but there are other encephalitis viruses here such as west nile virus, and other tickborne viruses, such as powassan and a new one recently in the news.

If you read this wikipedia write up on WNV, it says the virus has been found in various ticks but that mosquitoes are thought to be the vector. Sounds to me like it would not be impossible to get WNV from a tick, but supposedly not all the germs that a tick carries are transmitted in a bite. Seems to me like the verdict is "not proved."

Also, encephalitis can be a symptom of lyme disease.

Are you asking this question for a particular reason for just for information?

While TBE is linked to a virus, encephalitis, as a descriptor, is frequent with lyme and other TBD, too. Lyme can cause encephalitis. Clarity matters here.

If the virus, it's vital to have the very best LLMD, if possible.

And do not ever let any doctor tell you there is no treatment for a virus. LLMDs and LL NDs know better. I wish hospitals would administer IV garlic. They do (or used to) in China and it saved many lives.

Some LL NDs do IV garlic but there are also other anti-viral agents that most regular doctors won't know about.

As a descriptor:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encephalitis

Encephalitis

. . . accute inflammation of the brain . . .

[See CAUSES - so many of interest. Lyme is mentioned, too. However, I question the accuracy of the "Treatment" section. Still, some points of interest along with some that stops short.]

Thanks for the responses everyone! Much appreciated!

Poppy: I was asking for a friend.

Her daughter has been sick for awhile, was recently dx and seeing recommended LLMD. She is getting w/u for seizure b/o history (sports injuries) and recent symptoms.

One of her friends asked if it could be TBE. The friend is from a region of the world were TBE is reported (I think endemic).

My kid had encephalitis when she was sick, she had Borrelia, Babesia, Bartonella, had neurological symtpoms, but no seizures.

Online references said TBE doesn't occur in US; But CDC said TBE is not a "notifiable" disease here. So how does anyone know if it's here or not?

I wanted to ask other people what they've seen and experienced.

So far, no one has returned a comment to me that they have seen TBE, so maybe it isn't here.

Much thanks!
