Good news/Bad News

Good news . . . I got a broadband Internet connection in my house. Awesome.

Bad news . . . Pretty sure I got C. difficile colitis too.

99F temp, lower abdomenal pain, and, um, well let's just call it a bad tummy if you know what I mean. Past two days since saturday night. Here's what I did. Stopped my IV and oral abx. Tripled all my probiotic and yogurt supplements. Started flagyl. And called my doc, I'll talk to her tomorrow.

Can anyone share with me their personal experience with clostridium difficile colitis? Any insight on what I must do and must not do to beat this and get back on my antibiotics is much appreciated.

Thanks. Best Wishes.

Tim (Atlanta, GA)

Regular probiotics are good --- but the beneficial yeast known as Sacchromyces Boulardii has specific action against C. Diff.

It has worked like a charm for me. I now take Sac. Bou. regularly when on abx and I haven't had any more C. Diff problems.

I don't want to advertise for any one brand but I had a heck of a time finding this product after I finally learned about it (the guy at the local health food store totally scoffed at the idea of a beneficial yeast and told me he had never heard of Sacchromyces Boulardii).

So here's my source...Jarrow makes a good product and you can get it for a good price at www.iHerb.com.

I'm sure other people will come along and give you other choices but I didn't want to leave you hanging.

TIm,

i am sorry about the C. Diff, have no advice, one of the few things i haven't had.

I've been looking for you - my computer crashed and i lost your email address and number and i really wanted to run some stuff by you. Things are so bad - long story. Would love to hear your opinion though sorry you are doing so badly. Can you email me whenever you feel better?

Needing lots of help,
betsy (your neuro bud)

Hi Ion!

Ouch! Sorry about the c-diff. I had it several years ago and it's definitely a pain in the a**

I took flagyl for 10 days and it cleared it right up. You need to stay in touch with your doctor on this one. It can become very serious if not treated correctly.

Good Luck and Take Care....Terri

Lyma Bean is right about talking to your doctor and following his/her advice. Sorry I neglected to mention that.

You can use Sacchromyces Boulardii and take Flagyl too if that's what your doc recommends -- and you can continue with the SB as part of your probiotic regimen to hopefully avoid this problem in the future.

This is a link to discussion of studies on SB in treating antibiotic-related diarrhea and other matters.

According to this article, SB does not appear to directly eradicate the C Diff but does significantly reduce the symptoms through some other mechanism. The article relates that it can be useful in preventing a recurrence of C Diff -- that's been my experience.

thanks beverly,

i am not sure if i have this now because i only have diarrhea one a day, and not even, according to what i have read and looked up, it says if you have c.diff you have diarrhea all day long like 10 times or more. Its not the stomach flu, its got to be something bad bacteria, or yeast die off or just plain old massive irritation from the meds. i need help this is so uncomfortable.

I've had C. Diff several times--just lucky I guess ;-P I've only had it on IV not orals and usually when on claforan. Everyone is unique!

When I had it, the lower abdominal pain was significant, I was nauseaous, had a fever, and the runs, well, unbelievably. That was the first time when I had never had it before. Subsequently, I identified my "early detection system" and had milder symptoms when requesting a test. C. diff is a normal resident of your intestines but can grow out of control if your flora is upset (as in the case of antibiotic treatment). The bug produces two toxins (cleverly named A and B) which basically eat away at your intestines producing the fabulous symptoms of the runs, bleeding, and pain. However, rather than guess, postulate, and hypothesize, just get the test done!!! Very easy, takes a day or so to get results.

If you really have it, taking more acidophyllus and yogurt is kind of like spitting into the ocean. Treatment is either flagyl or oral vanco (which is what I use since I'm allergic to flagyl). Flagyl is famous on this board; oral vanco is tremendously expensive but works well (and its not absorbed systemically, stays in the gut, so little risk of side effects).

Probiotics and yogurt will help and are a good way to decrease your odds of getting this generally. Studies (you can find them on pub-med) show that S. Boulardi helps C. diff symptoms in combo with Flagyl/vanco that weren't treated well with F/V alone.

Anyway, you could have it (mildly thus far) so don't wait until it gets worse so that your symptoms match the books! Just get the easy test from doc, and if you don't have it, keep up the good work of taking those probiotics...

Hoping you test negative,
~DM.

I have had the same problem for many, many weeks. Have had GI problems while on IV antibiotics (nine months) and also while on oral (4 months), but since I've gone off antibiotics in October, my "D" has been absoloutely horrible. I had even started to feel well, but this problem is setting me back. I feel as bad as I did while herxing horribly on the IV. I'm scared beause my LLMD sent me to a GI surgeon who is determined find something wrong with my gallbladder. Two sonograms have come back negative, and so tomorrow I'm to have a scope with hormone to check the gallbladder. I feel they're missing this completely. I have no energy while i have the "D". I'll have it for several days and then it will clear up, but as soon as I have one week of wellness, it will flare up again. Horrible cramping. Took the flagyl which helped for one day and then I was right back on the "throne". I now am so wiped out that I start to cry when I feel it coming on again. I did have my stool tested and it came back negative, but they didn't tell me to leave the white container, which is the one where they test for c. difficile. I'm frustrated that my LLMD isn't specific with instructions, as this about the 100th time that I'm sent home with little instruction. I've told them that people who have LYme Disease need everything written down!! We can't remember our own children's names, so how could we remember all of their famous advice!! Any suggestions? I just don't want to have this scope test tomorrow because I'm so sick of the hospital and don't want to get out of bed! Is there treatment for c. difficile?
