My 16 yr old has just started Claforan after 6 weeks on Rocephin and some gall bladder problems. I heard Dr. B speak yesterday and in discussing Rocephin he said he preferred it to be given pulsed-4 days of the week. Is this the case for all IV drugs? Dr. J. didn't mention it to us but I keep hearing about pulsing. Thanks to all of the valuable info on this site we were able to get Sarah on Actigal quickly after an ultrasound showed a gall bladder full of stuff. She had an excruciating attack two days later, I got on Lymenet and read everything I could find, we asked for a prescription for the ursodiol and she hasn't had another attack and is feeling better. Thanks to all of you for being so generous with your time and sharing your knowledge and experience. I don't post much, but I read often and it has helped me feel less alone with all of this information to absorb.

The reason for pulsing the Rocephin is to give the gall bladder a break - not a problem with the other drugs. But I don't know the answer to your general question about if pulsing is recommended for other IV drugs for a teen. That's definitely a question for the doctor, though, regardless of our opinions.

Pulsing is the best method for administering fluids through an IV because it is less hard on the entrance vein and the body in general
