My LLMD has been treating me with zithromax, ceftin, and plaquenil for the past 12 months. I have improved a little but still have symptoms, mostly tingles in my hands and feet, sometimes lips too.
He wants me to take 6 weeks of flagyl (500 mg 3 times a day) now as he believes that it is the most effective abx for the cystic form, which he thinks is persisting in me. This will be combined with ceftin 1 G twice a day and 500 mg zithro once a day. Looking at earlier responses, this seems pretty aggressive?
Anyone out there have any experience with Flagyl? I have read about some nasty side effects and while I like the idea of breaking down the cysts, don't want to do so at the expense of my liver!
Thanks for any comments.

has his patients (I am one) Start LOW dose flagyl by itself...the herx can be tremendous.
1/4 or 1/2 pill to start then add another dose later in the day, eventually getting up to 3 doses a day at 250mg per dose.
Flagyl can cause one of the WORST herxheimers ever...go slow....these herxes can be almost deadly.

My LLMD started me on it from day 1 - a relatively low dose - 375mg once a day. It was a bit rough in the beginning but I had also started Rifampin, and I don't know which one was worse. I have made significant progress in the last 4 months.
Good luck to you!! And don't let scary stories worry you. Everyone is different, and reacts differently to meds. I even posted when I first started because I felt better - like, 'why doesn't have anything good to say about Flagyl' since I had heard so many horror stories.

I took Flagyl prior to being diagnosed with lyme about 3 months ago.
I got soooooooooo sick from it. The fatigue was unbelievable. It was really bad. I was taking 750 mg of it though.
I dont mean to scare you. Im sure its different for everyone. The doxycycline, mepron or zithromax i have taken was never as bad as the flagyl. Some people say that mepron/zithromax is pretty bad, but so far for me, its not.

Flagyl is the cyst buster I have been on it about 7 months while taking other abx's flagyl is used with other abx's thats the best way it works to crack the cell wall covering letting in the abx's.
Ps it will elevate liver enzymes so get blood work every 2 months to keep a eye on it. My wife's enzymes stayed normal.
ps Dont drink alcohol with it it says it will make you sick at the stomach.

I'm sure you know that you have to take Flagyl in combination with another abx.
Start slow and make sure you have Epsom Salts and Peroxide in the house so you can take hot baths in them.
Also, don't plan on doing a thing other than taking care of yourself while on this combo.
Heat may also help ease the pain. Four Advil gelcaps at a time at the onset of pain with ease it for you too.
I never herx'd like that before, but it took me further along in my healing than anything else. I stayled on Flagyl/Cedax combo for five months.
Good luck! Nancy

As the others have said, Flagyl can be hell - but well worth it.
Definitely start out slow and ramp up over several days to get to your dose.
Yes that treatment is fairly aggressive, but less than some. My theory is, if your body can take it ok then hit the Lyme as hard as you reasonably can - and keep it up for a while. Worked for me... so far.
About your liver concern: your doc may want to regularly monitor liver enzymes. One simple thing you can do for it is to drink lots of water. That'll make everything feel better, too - helps flush toxins.
My doc had me do Flagyl several times, with about a month off in between (but no time off abx)... I did a full year of orals after 5 months of IV plus orals.
Hang in there!

I went straight on 500 of flagyl 3x and 250 of zith 1x right after 4 months of IV rocophrin. After the IV I was sx free but the flagyl found all the buggers that were hiding in cyst form. The herx was definately noticable but TODAY I finished the course of treatment that perscribed for me. I am once again sx free baring what dammage was done to my CNS.
Things that helped:
Water, lots of it too.
Green tea, lipton makes bags that has ginsing and honey in it I made it into iced tea worked great.
Acidolophis
Watched yeast and did a yeast kill supplement recently.
Hot Tub
rest
low carb/sugar diet
be real careful about alcohol flagyl can be like anabuse and make you real sick so even check your mouthwash, we lymies tend to be chemical sensitive as it is.
Hang in there and hope you feel better soon

Drinking with flagyl will give you a heck of a lot more than woozy in the tummy; anabuse reaction- severly ill.
That said Fred ( hey that rhymed) GO SLOW! Flagyl can cause neuropathy, so that tingling in your hands? Might get a bit worse.
Take it easy and be well soon.
