I started a course of Minocycline about a week ago, and have had intense dizziness since. Should I be worried at all? Is there anything I can do to keep myself more balanced?

Also, do reactions such as dizziness mean the antibiotics are working?

Thanks.

I had dizziness before starting treatment. But when I started with the Mino, my dizziness and ear ringing increased.

I think the Mino is supposed to cross the blood-brain barrier. Maybe that is the reason for the dizziness? Or maybe it is killing keets?

Anyone know?

I think dizziness is a 'side effct' of this medication- no? (that's what it said in my pharmacy's phamlet- in fact it tells me not to lie down for 30 min. after I take it due to possible dizziness).

I myself haven't had this problem- but believe it would be the medication, not a herx effect.

How much are you taking? Is it for neuro symptoms?

I am only on 100 mgs. a day & wonder if it is enough (I weigh 115 or so).

-take care

Minno is intense.Dizziness is a common side effect of minno.Alot of people ramp up slowly on this drug because it is intense.I would say the dizziness is just a side effect and not herxing. Are you seeing a doc just over the Conn. border?

I took high doses of mino a year ago, and am on a lower dose now. For me, the dizzyness was a sign the dose was too much for me, and even now, I can only handle 100mg every other day because of the herx.

It's interesting that you've been on it a week and don't know whether you've herxed yet. To quote another Lymenetter, I was plastered to the couch for two weeks the first time around. There was no question at all about that herx, and it's been pretty much the same this time around, too. The herx is so incapacitating that I just don't have time for it--it's tough to find two available weeks nowadays to be unable to walk, read, or speak coherently.

I am currently on 300mg/day. I had some lightheadedness before I started the meds, but nothing like this. I've also had a huge decrease in overall feeling... I feel completely disconnected from my body. This is my second Lyme diagnosis in 3 years.

Wow,300mg a day!Isnt the usual dose 200mg?Does 300mg penetrate the brain much more,it sounds like it would?I wonder how it compares with rocephin penetration. Most people struggle to get up to 200mg,I can see why your dizzy. Were you told you could ramp up on the drug.Im on minno and rifampin, quite the combo to handle too, hang in there and be careful, dont overdo it.

I just started Mino yesterday and my LLMD warned me before I started it that dizziness is definitely a side effect of the drug.

Apparently 300mg was too much for me. My doctor advised that I go off of it immediately and start 100mg on Monday, and work myself up to 200mg. Sounds better to me.

I've been on 300 mg / day for 2 months. The first 2 weeks were the worst. I have no more dizziness, but I just feel like all my symptoms are worse than they were before I started. Don't know if this is a herx but I don't think so. I think the mino-lyme battle going on in my brain is just irritating my lesions.

In the first 2 weeks, I found the dizziness was manageable as long as I took the mino with food. For the first 2 weeks I was taking 100mg with my 2 cups of morning coffee, which gave me a heart pounding, dizzy, head rush. Had to pull over to a rest area on the turnpike one day for about 1/2 hour one day.

If you stick with it, the dizziness will pass.

And BTW ther reason you're not supposed to lie down is because the mino will irritate the bottom of the esophagus where it meets the stomach. Hiatial hernia, I think?

Hi,

I started on Mino in Dec of 2002. When I first started it, I had a bad herx. One of the many symptoms I had was dizziness.

Mino I was told is one of the big guns in the antibiotic world. Meaning it is a powerful antibiotic. If one can stand the side effects, it is a great drug.

I stopped taking all antibiotics about 3 months ago, but as my hubby may now have lyme, the LLMD suggested I start back on meds for 3 months as a precaution. So lucky me, gets to start back on Biaxin, Plaq, and Mino on Friday.

When my herx got bad, I stopped all meds and gave my body a break, it was the best thing I ever did.

Also when I stopped the mino for a week and started up again at 100mg twice a day, the herx (or side effects) was much less severe.

I hope you are feeling better. Stick with it if you can. It is an excellent drug and it is the only drug I have used that even touched my neuro lyme.

Best wishes!

~Lymebrat

( ps, for more Mino info, do a search and use my name for the search. When I was herxing so badly on it, I posted all kinds of info)

Dizziness is definitely a side effect of this drug. The first time I took it (100mgx2) I was dizzy for the entire 3 weeks and had to stop for that reason.

This time, I started out with 50mgx2 for a week, then moved up to 100mgx2 and avoided most of the dizziness, so far anyway. Ramping up is a good thing to try, in my opinion. The lower dose was not effective, but the higher dose is.
