Hi, I am confused at this point. I have an appt to see Dr C in Mo next month.

My mom is concerned for me so she asked arround at her work and found a lady who had lyme disease and used to work at an infectious disease clinic.

She took the doctor recommended 3 week dosage for lyme and is now doing great.

So I called the clinic thinking that they maybe he is a good doctor that could help me and it would save me money and a long trip.

The nurse said they put lyme patients on 200mg of doxy for three weeks and that is the treatment for lyme. If you are not better after that then you probably have something else.

My question is this lady went on the 3 week treatment and is fine now. How can some people be fine with that short of a treatment and others need longer?

I have had this for 3+ years and I am 1 1/2 weeks into my treatment and am not feeling better yet. So I know 3 weeks is not enough for me.

How can some people get better so quickly? That is what confuses me.

Thanks!!

Usually the longer you have it, the longer it takes to get rid of it.

Well a lot of these Drs that say your cured dont follow up? this lady you speak of if they Drs didnt get it with enough abx treatment and long enough will relapse. No confusion
If treated early and long enough with abx's you (may) not get it. You need to read about how spirochetes work they begin too change after entering your body quickly putting on protiens evading your immune responce . http://www.lymeinfo.net/LDAdverseConditions.pdf

WELCOME To LYMENET

Here's more goodys! A typical response to newcomers.

Hi and WELCOME! Get a LLMD or at least Dr that is willing to learn about lyme. Borrelia Burgdorferi is a clinical diagnosis, based on symptoms and on your response to treatment. Good Luck, bumpy road ahead.

Post for a LLMD in Seeking a Doctor. Ps remember I am not a Dr, just a fellow sufferer.

If the disease is caught right away (pretty much you see the tick on yourself) it can be gotten rid of with short term abx, I believe.

Here is the way I see it. Yes folks do get better on three weeks of Doxy especially if it's caught early. However the critical piece of information is when she said that if you are not better in three weeks then it has to be something else.

Now countless people can attest to this situation. Three weeks your not better you can then talk to a Infectious Illness specialists. This doctor in good faith and sincerely will do their best to help and will likely run a number of tests. Likely, they will find nothing and then proceed to tell you that if they could not find anything its likely just in your head and you need to see someone about getting on some sort of antidepressant.

The other option is you can start running tests that test each one of your symptoms. This is where the chase really begins and folks can waste countless ten of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars now going from doctor to doctor clinic to clinic running expensive test after expensive test. Now you get labeled as psychosomatic and doctors simply stop taking you seriously some will refuse to run tests that could eliminate one illness or the next. All will recommend you see a Psychologist or that you are perhaps too stressed and simply need to relax.

That being said I am by all means see an infectious specialist. Eliminate the possibilities but don't start on the huge chase if it comes to that. If your infectious doctor does not find anything do yourself a favor and run a Lyme test recommended by Dr C. If Dr C. does not think you have Lyme then look else where but please don't assume it can't be Lyme because you did not get better on the standard protocol of three weeks of Doxy.

If I were in your place, I would definitely wait for the appt with Dr C in MO.

He will check out all possibilities, even some that may be overlooked by drs who do not have as much experience with Tick-Borne Diseases (TBDs).
This could save you a lot of time, energy, money, & unnecessary testing.

If you choose an infectious disease dr, there's no way of knowing how much he knows about TBDs & their treatment.

Dr C will evaluate you for Lyme & co-infections, & he has the expertise gained from treating many Lyme patients - probably hundreds, maybe thousands.

If he does not diagnose Lyme, it is my understanding that he will check until he finds the problem.

IMO, you deserve the best - a LLMD to evaluate your situation.
If it is Lyme, you need a Lyme expert to manage your treatment - one who has lots of satisfied customers.

Have you read "What do you like about Dr C?" http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum3/HTML/004140.html

Hi there!!

I agree with CBB.

Don't waste any more time or money on someone who isn't Lyme literate.

I wasted 2 years going to so many specialist and the Mayo twice with no results and thousands of dollars lost.

The upside was going to an LLMD and starting treatment finally. And putting a name to a faceless enemy.

I travel out of state too but find it well worth the extra expense to get on the road to recovery.

Thanks for all of your advice and comments.

I will keep my appt with Dr. C. One question.

You have to pay everything up front with him. They said the office visit is $460 plus labs.

They said I do not have to have my lyme test redone since I have a current copy of my positive test.

What kind of other labs do you think he will run? I just want an idea as to how much money I will need to bring along.

Thanks!!

It depends what being "fine" means. I bet if you looked into this lady she has since been diagnosed with Fibro, MS, Chronic Fatigue or something else.

Ask. I am curios. Just ask if this woman has any "other" diseases.
