I was wondering what most of you guys use for pain medications. My family doctor won't give me percocet-he doesn't want me to get hooked-and all I said was well I don't even use it if I don't have to.

I've been in a lot of pain; mostly achy and soreness, but I have no relief of pain-so ANY SUGGESTIONS would be AWESOME!!

Thanks guys

Jenn

Yeah, I tried Advil Gelcaps, but I'm not too sure they help me much at all since I have fibromyalgia and a gallstone on top of lyme....but I can always try that again....Thanks Beachcomber

Jenn,
I manage pain with:

1. Neurofascial Processing, can order "The Body Wisdom" book from ww.centerimt.com

2.homeopathic Trameel, made by -Heel. You can get it at many natural food stores.

3. Kaprex, a natural alternative to advil, tylenol, etc. No GI upset. Made by Metagenics. If you go to www.metgenics.com you can ask abt a retailer in your area

The combination of these 3 things plus lots of green tea, water, no sugar, carbs, exercise and epsom salt baths, keep me going pretty well.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Jenn,
I use Aleve. It may sound weak, but if I'm in alot of pain I take two and it works very well for me! Give it a try.

Jenn,

First thing to remember: you have a right to pain relief. Take a look at the book "The Truth About Chronic Pain."

It's really trial and error with pain meds. And people in pain very very rarely get addicted to pain meds. I am on Flexeril, which is a muscle relaxer. It helps my muscle pain, particularly upper back. I take Vicodin when needed. The vicodin has been great, but I noticed that, since starting Ketek, I get exhausted if I take vicodin.

I suggest finding a good pain specialist...if you can, or talk to your LLMD.

Four Advil Gelcaps taken at the onset of pain. Don't wait until the pain is excrutiating or it won't work.

DaveS on pain meds for lyme:
I initially tried 'celebrex' (not sure what it is really...) but it was a NIGHTMARE. It was great for the joint pain, but that's probably because it caused so many other problems and so much other pain that I ceased to notice the joint pain any more.
It ate holes in my intestines and I should have gone to the big H, but couldn't possibly afford it-- so I tried drinking yarrow tea, on the advice of an herbalist friend-- that's how I found out about yarrow. (I just recommended it in another post!)--and I played beethoven and cursed monsanto to the heavens as strongly as I could muster at the time, and, of course, meditated.
Once I had begun taking these kinds of actions, I started feeling better. That was a scary night!
I went back to ibuprofen, willow bark, (wittth yarrow tea, just to be sure since these have a reputation for raunching the gut.
And my LLMD prescribed for me this stuff called 'nutrijoint' that helped immenely.- but you have to be careful not to take it too close to abx, especially doxy.
And I must mention also: There's this roll-on stuff called 'joint-ritis', which has sulfates in a lanolin base, that is very helpful for joint pain. It has penetrating power and gets deep into the joint-it's pretty amazing. You can get get it at many, but not all, well-stocked pharmacies.

Motrin helps me. It works better than any other over the counter drug. My husband agrees.

I take Flexeril when Motrin won't help or when I think I might need it to fall asleep.

Hi Jenn,

It's great to see how many people are getting relief from things other than pain meds!
However, some of us are in severe pain. It's impossible to tell on line who is in severe enough pain to need something stronger. If you believe you are I suggest, as someone else did, asking to see a pain specialist. They will help you determine what you need to get relief. Being pain free would be great, but for some of us it isn't possible. You should be able to use something that takes the edge off enough to make life bareable though. I personally have to take morphine. I also have fibro in addition to Lyme as well as other pain causing ailments. The other thing that works for me is a very, very hot bath. I hope you feel some relief soon!!
Take care,
Beth

Since your pain is achy soreness it doesnt sound that severe....

I'm not saying your not in pain but I believe percaset if for severe pain..

please dont think that I'm trying to say ur pain is insignifigant or anything ...

just they way u described it makes it sound like it is not severe and I'm sure the dr. thought the same way.

also i was told percacet is not a good medicine to be on long term cuz our bodies get used to it faster then other pain meds so we will need to take more until it just stops working.

Now my sugesstion...
Have you tried ultracet?......

ultracet is not a narcotic and says it is rarely addicting.

ultram is simular but ultracet worked better for me.

also celebrex, mobic, bextra are antiinflamitories ... and they help some people...

I had an allergic reaction to celebrex... but the others I took and they did not help at all.

Pain pills aren't really supposed to make you pain free..... they are supposed to make the pain bearable...

same with pain management... when ur pain is so bad that u need prescription pain pills.... usually the most you can hope for is for the pain to be bearable.

If nothing over the counter is working.... and your dr wont prescribe anything ....

I suggest you find a pain management dr....

But I would ask your llmd to recomend one....

From my experience.....Because many pain mangement people want to daignose you when you come into their office with lyme....

But a pain management dr. can acess your pain and find out what will Work for you the best... It can be a trail and error process though .... not all things work for all people.

I hope you find something that makes your pain better.

Best wishes

Hi Jenn,
I've had severe pain for a long time. I finally saw a pain specialist a few months ago and started taking methadone. My pain has been neuropathic and methadone is often more effective against neuropathic pain than other opioids. If you can find a good pain specialist I think it would really help. If you need to take an opioid it helps to have a doctor with a lot of experience in their use.
