Hello I have just started meds. I was on them for 5 days and I noticed an improvement. A little more energy and my hands stopped hurting. Now My hands are hurting again. Why would I feel better and then start hurting again? I haven't changed anything? Any ideas?

Hi Merrie....Most of us have experienced the ups and downs during treatment. Sounds like you are, too!

Some people feel worse about every 4 weeks when the old symptoms flare up...called a herx reaction to the antibiotics. As soon as you think one symptom is gone it suddenly appears again. Have to say that I never had the herx thing every four weeks.
Sometimes every two weeks, every week, etc.
As treatment progresses your periods of feeling better will last longer!

Hang in there. I think it helps to keep a journal and write in it each day reveiewing symptoms and how you feel, etc. Then you can look back to your notes and see your progress.

This disease takes lots of patience and fortitude! Keep us posted on how you're doing?

You could be herxing...

a herx is when a current symptom gets worse and/or a new symptoms shows up or an old symptoms returns.

Herxes can last any amount of time....

and they can occur at anytime during treatment....

When you herx you are killing the lyme bacteria....and because u killed so much ... u herx

they do NOT have to appear in a cycle of 4 weeks.

Also you do not have herx to get better.

since you were feeling better than worse my guess is that it would be a herx.....

drinking LOTS of water sometimes helps... its a good thing to do even if you dont feel a difference.

I am NOT a dr..... this is just from my expereince as a lyme patient.

Best wishes

My doctor said that if I feel I am herxing I should stop the meds until I feel better. If your herxes are really minor would you stop the meds or just push on through it? Any ideas?
Thanks!!

Merrie, welcome to the board.

Be sure to see TINCUP's links for new members especially Dr. Barrascano's guidelines...print it; you will refer to it over & over. I finally printed it yesterday & reading it now. Many things finally making sense.

As you take the various meds, you will begin to realize why.

I'm 3 months into abx + benicar for 2 months. Still hurting & in places I didn't hurt before....the meds are working!

It's when you do NOT hurt, the meds aren't doing things to destroy/kill the bacteria.

If you are having a severe herx reaction I would back off the meds...not a doctor...but
I know from hanging around here that a really bad herx can be serious.

I think it is reasonable to expect to feel lousy when you herx...and it will pass in one to several days or a week perhaps.

If you are really miserable and having trouble functioning or having a lot of pain
it makes sense to give your body a break.
That's not a medical opinion as I am not a doctor! Some doctors would suggest you tough it out...as yours did...other disagree and suggest you stop meds for a few days. You have to figure out what's tolerable for you.

I found drinking lots of water with fresh squeezed lemon juice in it was helpful. Flushes your system out and gets rid of the toxins that make us so miserable.

Best of luck to you...just starting on meds is the toughest time I think!
