last winter finally got a babesia dx - did 3 cycles of mepron and zith...did the marshall protocol for 5 months until my doc decided we weren't getting anywhere because i probably still have babesia (i agree!). but i no longer tolerate zith at all (with or without benicar). good results with benicar and mepron, though,....also, have doing 200 mg of arteminisin bid since last winter.....am wondering if anyone knows the absolute minimun amt of zith one needs to prevent babs resistance or if there are alternative antibx one can use instead of zith - was looking through the archives and someone posted something about ketek....thanks, deb

Hi I am on malarone + ketek. (malarone is similar to mepron but has an extra anti malaria drug combined with it.) The combo seems to work ok. Started this after ending mepron+zith 3 months earlier and then relapsing with babesia.
This combo started to work pretty well about 5 days after starting it, prior to which the babesia symtoms where quite noticable. It is easier to take then mepron since they are all tablets.
Also, the publication regarding the trials of mepron + zithromax did not give the periods over which single drug therapies developed drug resistance. If I where you I would not fool around with a single drug regime as once you have resistance you will be in a bind.
Also the macrolides have always resulted in increased Lyme symptoms for me, maybe that is what is going on with you (ie zith hard to take???). The first time, I was on mepron + zith for 7 months. Babesia cleared up at 6 months. It took aobut 3 weeks to relapse once the meds were stopped.
Hope that helps.

If you read the ILADS papers they say that the macrolide (Zithromax) is "recommended" but, the necessity is still somewhat anecdotal. The hamster studies showed 20% better results when a macrolide was added. The human studies have been very small (not a broad enough group) to form an absolute conclusion about this. The studies are still being done. Time will tell.
I took Mepron with low-dose Zith (100mg bid) in an oral suspension for 5 months. My gut became so torn up from Zith. I had diarrhea, cramps and constant candida. My MD and I agreed to try the Mepron without a macrolide. It has been nine months and I continue to hold steady - no setbacks. I also take Artemisinin 1 month on, one month off. The manufacturer recommends a break from Artemisinin. You can become resistant to it and it can cause some liver & kidney problems if used for too long.
Zith nearly destroyed my gut. It was worse than the Lyme symptoms. Try the oral suspension. That is much kinder on the gut. But, you will love this, it has sugar in it! Ugh, don't they get it? Same with Nystatin - how dumb is that?

david - thanks so for your answer - i would probably have problems with ketek as well since it's related to zith - how often do you take it, at what dose and how much does it cost? probably don't need malarone as i respond very well to mepron - especially with the benicar blockade. i was searching everywhere for studies on mepron & zith - obviously haven't yet found the right site - single drug therapy is bit scary - i see my doc next week & we will discuss it but am very relieved to read beachcomber's answer. thanks again, deb

We have done mepron with either tetra or biaxin, with good results.
Chris is on mepron again after several months off to flush the remaining Babs out, hopefully. He was highly positive for babs and has done tetra with it both times.
His next bottle will be while he is in Florida so he will switch abx to Biaxin to avoid sun problems.

beachcomer - thanks so for your reply (i thought i had replied but must have screwed it up!) - i'm much relieved to find someone who's on mepron without zith and i will search the ilads papers....thanks also for the info on arteminisin - my doc had never suggested an on again-off again - art, though, has never seemed to help any...protocol... deb
