My little one is now 17.5 months and is STILL having problems with ears after tubes at 7 months and them coming out several months ago.
Here lately one ear has been bleeding with puss. My reg dr. saw her last and we did the abx with the abx drops. This past Monday it looked clear and he did not see any problem there.
BAM!!! .... Wednesday, it starts bleeding again! Anyone had these problems with their child or themself?
We are scheduled for an appt. next Thursday with a different ENT dr, for I did not like the one we were using.
I am just sooo frusterated with it all....seems like her whole life she has not gone more than 6 weeks without something happening with one or both ears.
She is currently on abx and has been since August exept for when she got thrush so bad I had to take her off for about a week or so to clear that up.

Have you considered food allergies with this little one?
The most common allergy tied to ear problems is milk, but also wheat and such can be problematic.
Do a search on kids and milk allergies and see if it strikes any chords with you. Too many parents aren't told about what to look for, how many different ways allergies can manifest themselves...and too many pediatricians simply aren't aware of it themselves!
I was talking to a mother at a park a few weeks ago - her child was kind of "slow" (poor speech, poor motor skills) and had very red ears and no ability to focus. She told me that he drinks almost a gallon of milk a day - he was a classic milk allergy picture, the poor kid...milk does not "do a body good" if you're sensitive to it!
Doris Rapp wrote a book called "Is This Your Child?" that covered food sensitivities very well. Amazon had it last I looked.

It could be milk, soy or wheat/gluten. THe antibiotics feed yeast and that exacerbates the cycle. Patti

I agree about the diet connection. I had tubes SEVEN times. I also think the thrush is a key and fungus could be involved here.
I as an adult have eliminated wheat and dairy and have noticed much improvement (when I manage to stick to it), sugar too.I am also loaded with yeast, even before lyme treatment cause of so much abx over my life for chronic infections of all kinds.
You can open an acidophillus capsule and put it in applesauce or something like this. I would also give her some flax oil. I did this with my son and there was no reaction. Maybe in a snack, like a teaspoon. I am not a doctor, and you may want further advice with such a young one, but I have done this with my son and he was 2.5.
I would seriously concentrate on diet. Especially since she is so young it may not be that hard. Don't let anyone else give her junk. I have often heard that the "chronic part" of ear infection has become mixed with yeast and bacteria cause of all the abx, but could be wrong.

Oh and I would definately put off her next vaccination boosters as they will further drain her immune system and make other problems for her. I hate to be blunt but many many parents of children with chronic ear infections/anti-biotic over use have lost their children to autism, pdd and adhd. Im not off the wall just stating a true fact. If you want more info just e-mail and I can send you some links. Pattiecake

Have them culture her for yeast. An allergist may actually do this.
My son had an ear infection since the time he was born until he was 3. It oozed blood, oozed green, oozed yellow. It did all kinds of things. He had bilateral tubes put in THREE times.
everytime I would take him to the doctor
He would have "otitis media " , or fluid in the ear drum, or pus, or an ear infection, and then came "serious otitis media oddorhea- ear infections that stink like crazy"
I finally took him to childrens hospital and they cultured him for yeast.
he had to have a deepline to his heart to get rid of the yeast, it was that bad.
he hadnt had an ear infection since and that was 6 years ago.

You definitely want to reevaluate giving a growing girl anything soy-based as well. Dr. Mercola has written on soy many times. Here's the most recent article - http://www.mercola.com/2004/dec/4/soy_truth.htm

Mikken, thanks for the link on soy, I never knew....here are just a few things on that page that made my mouth drop:
Reduced male fertility Increased risk of certain types of cancers Damaged brain function in men Developmental abnormalities in infants Early onset of puberty in western women
I guess I just need to get her off any type of milk, huh? Not sure what to give her then. I had to give my oldest soy too. Wish I had known!

Isn't your daughter a patient of Dr. C? I would run it by him and see what he thinks.
I would also get a 2nd opinion from another ENT. I have found all specialists vary so much in their opinion of a problem.
My son (Jordan, now 14) had non-stop ear infections when he was that age. His pediatrician didn't want to put in tubes, so we finally switched doctors. He had PE tubes put in at age 5 1/2. He has had a few infections since the tubes, but not many. His PE tubes stayed in place for 3 1/2 years.
Jordan was diagnosed with Lyme, Babesia, and Bartonella in 8/01. We did not see a tick, tick bite, or a rash. So, I'm thinking he may have had Lyme since he was very young.
When Jordan was referred to an ENT, she put the tubes in the same week. He should have had them in much earlier.
Jordan developed speech problems from all the infections and fluid in his ears.

I am thinking that she is already having problems with the speech thing.
She had been saying BiTe, biTE..... Now, it is BiPe, biPe....
I am going to a new ENT, not the one that put the tubes in. So, maybe they can see something different.
Oh, yes, forgot to mention that her ear bled again last night....arrgghh...I just wonder how painful it is for her. Poor baby!
I am going to ask for an allergy test too. Also, I did not even think of calling Dr.C, DUH to me. Thanks for reminding me, my brain has been a little haywire lately!

Ok, her ear started to bleed again this evening. We tried earlier today to put the left over drops we had from last week when the same ear was bleeding. The blood/dried blood would not let it penetrate.
I am not one to run my kids to the dr or ER for every little thing. The ENT I was seeing did not think it was a big deal when she was bleeding a few months ago.
This is the weekend, what would you do?
Many thanks in advance!

Hmm, soy is a bigtime allergen for many people, but I would skip the allergy testing and go straight for dietary elimination to see what works for her - mom's LLMD ordered the "best" allergy testing for her and it came back all wonky - saying that she was ok with eggs and fish when even touching fish makes her hands itch and eating eggs makes her vomit!
And mushrooms! It said that she was ok with mushrooms when they cause an asthma attack EVERY time with her. Not cool.
She and the LLMD had a discussion about the results and he told her that he was getting similar responses from other patients on this and other testing methods and has come to the conclusion that no allergy testing is completely reliable...
About the blood - is it a lot of blood? I wonder if it's possible that the infection could rupture the eardrum? (Don't worry - those can heal). If she were mine, I would be more comfortable having someone at least have a look-see at her and offer an opinion.
The speech changes - could those be the result of not being able to hear properly?
Oh yeah - mom wants me to tell you to look closest at the foods the kid loves the best - allergens have such a weird effect on the body that it can end up craving them!
I know that this is certainly true with my niece - she has a milk allergy and always had to have cheese on everything...and had a lot of ear infections as a baby until we figured it out and eliminated milk products from her life! "Magically", the ear infections stopped.
She's 17 now and still craves cheese something awful - but she also knows that cheese affects her badly - makes her tired, irritable, and causes weight gain. If she eats a lot of it, she also gets cold-like symptoms and a vaginal yeast infection. Nice, huh?
Good luck! Tracking down an allergy(s) is no fun, but once you get rid of it, it's like the road has been cleared before you!

How long before you see the new ENT? I believe I would take her somewhere immidiately to get a second opinon. At least to set my mind at ease. The blood could not be a good sign I don't think. I am not a Doc but I know it would scare the heck out of me.
My son had chronic ear infections and had tubes put in when he was 23 months old. Spiked fevers as high as 104 but I never saw any blood.
I hope she gets better soon. Keep us posted.

Well, it will be Thursday before I see the new ENT.
I talked myself out of going to the ER after talking to the ER nurse. Taryn has not had any fever and does not appear to be in any type of pain, except to the touch of her ear.
I am in turmoil over this BELIEVE me. I would like this new ENT to see what is going on, but do not want it to go on too long.
I plan on giving her what she has left as far as the drops and augmentin that she was always given by the old ENT.
THanks for all concerned and for your replies. That helps me so much! (even if I did not do what the majority of you would)
Just to hear others experience and causes is a big insight.

Reguardless of what the majority think, you are there and we are not. Mother knows best is what I always say. You are worried and looking for answers that is the best thing to do. I know the ER drills too. Probably end up waiting 4 hours just for a big waste of money just hearing the same ol same ol.
I sure hope she gets better soon and the new ENT can give you more answers than the last.

Hi lookin,
I don't have anything to add as far as advice, but I sure hope your little one will be feeling better real soon.
And you hang in there too, it's so hard to watch your little one be sick or in pain.

It's difficult to decide if something is really an emergency, bad enough to go to the ER.
From the information that you gave (this is an ongoing problem, the doc wasn't too concerned the last time that the ear bled, she's not running a fever, in alot of pain, or acting "sick") I surmised that it wasn't worth disrupting her night to rush her to see the ER doc.
I think you did well, Mom. Carol
p.s. Adding, you did the right thing to call the ER nurse. She knew the right questions to ask you to determine if your daughter had taken a turn for the worse.

Just want to add a quick one:
Now several years ago, I had my 2 year old grandchild sitting on my lap while her parents were on a vacation and we were seeing our doctor for Lyme. We had Lyme. She does not. Our doctor admired the beautiful child and I responded, "yes, guess what, some doctor wants to put tubes in her ear in about ten days because she has had constant ear infections staring early in life."
His instant answer: She is probably allergic to dairy. Do you want me to test her quickly? I said yes. He got up from his chair, ART tested (muscle tested)her while she was sitting on my lap. It took about 40 seconds. The results: She was allergic to total dairy products, as well as soya.
We stopped all dairy and soya instantly, including cheeses, and the parents cancelled the tube appointment with their other doctor when they returned from vacation. Little Caylee has not had another ear infection since then, now three years later.
She has her own "special milk" (organic rice milk) and is very happy and healthy.
Hope your little one gets better soon.

Lookingforanswers,
Your welcome. If I sounded judgemental in my first post I did not mean to at all. Not in a million years would I ever do that.
All of us worry tremendously over our children and try desperatly to make the best decisions. I would never pass judjement on another mother here.
I hope your daughter is feeling better today and take care of yourself as well.

SBM, No mam, I did not mean it like that either!
I just re-read what I wrote and it did sound like I thought you scolded me the first time. I did not feel that way at all. I am sorry too. That was not my intention either.
I have been using the drops and augmenton (YUCK) that I had left over from a previous visit. They seem to be working, but I am more and more convinced that it is the soy!
Thanks for all info from all of you!

Have you tried fresh, organic raw goat's milk;closest thing to mother's milk-digests in only 20 min. vs. 6 hours for cow's milk? You can also get GOATEIN IG powder from Garden of Life USA,Inc.,which is made from raw goat's milk & colostrum-helps with immune system function. Also, make sure your child gets the proper fats & oils balance; that has a lot to do with healthy function.Do not ever restrict saturated fats and cholesterol with a growing child; they need them for growth and brain development.I wonder if being on soy or other trade formulas may have something to do with the current ear situation-they are sadly lacking in certain essential nutrients. Also, do you watch out for additives like artificial color, flavor, sugar, trans fats, high veg.oils? They can also cause lots of problems in people, especially little ones. There's lots of good info on the Web about a healthy diet. Themakersdiet.com is excellent, but there are plenty of others to choose from.GOOD LUCK & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
