I'm starting Plaquenil & Biaxin soon. The responses to my posts about side effects have been generally reassuring but now I'm really worried about losing my hair. My hair has gotten really long and I'm not eager to loose it.

My question for those of you who took plaquenil is: Did you loose your hair? How much of it? Did it thin or come out in clumps, did it happen right away etc.

Hatsnscarfs

My son has been on plaquenil for nearly 10 mos. now and he hasn't had any problems losing hair. He will be 10 years old next week. He's on 200 mg a day (100 in the am, 100 mg in the pm). I know some people take 400 mg a day - I think it's according to dose for your age. His hair is ok on 200mg. a day.

Good luck -

Cigi

I have been on plaquinel for 3 1/2 months, taking 400 mg per day. I have notice an increase in hair loss. It is thinning, coming out in small clumps. I think it is noticeable, but my family and friends claim that they can't tell the difference.

I am not sure that the hair loss is due to plaquinel, since I have had similar (not as bad) hair loss in the past, when not a plaquinel.

I've3 been on Plaquenil with Zith for over a year and a half.....

The hair loss I had prior to starting has ceased......so I'm losing LESS hair now than I have for several years.

I was on Plaq for 2 months and hair started to thin. Stopped it, and the hair stopped thining. Unfortunately, it hasn't been as thick since. To add insult to injury, it didn't help my Babs or Bart symptoms.

I mentioned this to my LLMD and he said Lyme can cause this. Coincidental, maybe, but I don't think so. It's listed as a potential side effect of the drug.

Talk to your LLMD if you're concerned

I have been on Plaquenil for 16 months. There are a few more strands that come out after every shower, but the new woman I went to recently to cut my hair was late to an appt. because she hadn't alloted enough time to cut my hair because it is so thick! So, definitely no noticeable loss.

Ive taken it twice. In the early 90's I took it for well over a year and then last year for several months and no hair loss.

I have very fine thin scandanivian hair and not a lot of it so if I lost even a little I would have notice it right away.

That should give you some ideas.
