I have H Pylori which has flared up again and needs dealing with. I started treatment for it over a year ago with Flagyl and Amoxicillin - BEFORE I'd had any Lyme treatment (abx).

I could not finish the treatment then because my reaction to the Flagyl was so bad (herx from hell?). And, so it was just left, and I started Lyme treatment with Biaxin, and Mepron for Lyme and later Bicillin, etc.

Now I have dyspepsia/esophagal pains again and am supposed to start Ketek on Monday after having 3 weeks off abx, while taking Diflucan for 2 of those weeks.

Can I treat the H Pylori simultaneously while on Ketek? Does anyone know or have experience with that? I am not sure if I can, or if I should delay the start of Ketek, and deal with the H Pylori separately and before starting Ketek.

In the meantime I am on just Omeprazole to try to minimize the problem (and Diflucan, which is only for 2 more days).

Thank you, Janet, I have. The usual abx are Flagyl, Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin.

I know Clarithromycin can't be taken with Ketek.......and basically wondered if the other two can be done with Ketek, or if anyone has experience in this area, who is on Ketek also (at the same time as treating H Pylori).

I'm raising more questions than answering probably, but...

I'm on Ketek and recently began having esophagal pains. I've never had them before, but have now had them since Thursday. It's really annoying to not be able to drink coffee when you are studying for finals!

I spoke to the nurse at my LLMD's office today and they are mailing me a blood test requisition form. She said she wants to check for a bacterial infection in my stomache, that I am assuming is H. Pylori. I had a small amount of antibodies to it when I first started treatment.

I am on Ketek and have been on Ketek since November. So, if it turns out I have H. Pylori, then it likely means Ketek doesn't kill it. We are also checking my liver and pancreatic enzymes though, as they were slightly elevated a few months ago.

Thanks Cave. I did wonder about Ketek, but my GP has never used Ketek before (for ANYTHING) and still it would need something with it I guess, and not Clarithromycin as the two don't mix. And,not Flagyl of course. I am just trying to figure out if I delay starting Ketek and go back on Biaxin with Amoxicillin to treat the HP or not. Also where I live - ONE WEEK is standard treatment time. I am a BIT worried about that.

Aniek -

As I said to Cave above, I wondered about Ketek for H Pylori, but as with Biaxin, I guess it wouldn ot work on it's own, or I would have been cured of H Pylori as I just finished 9 months of Biaxin 2 weeks ago and problem is worse than ever (well, since 1988 anyway).

I've read information that mastic gum can be used to treat H. Pylori.
Have any of you tried that?

Just a thought.

Thanks Carol,

That's interesting, and I found this:
http://www.mastic-gum-for-stomach-ulcers.com/

I might give it a try after I try to find out if it interferes with any drugs (pharmaceutical).

Wouldn't be great if it could be that simple.

Thanks Cave,

I am now waiting to hear back from LLMD - my regular local GP is on vacation and he, I understasnd, likes to stick with his routine of one week of Flagyl and Amoxicillin.

Might to talk to the local pharmacist who is usually very helpful, although he had not heard of Ketek (yet) when I was speaking with him last week (not about Hpylori).

So, maybe a good plan is start the Ketek on Mon as planned, and after a week or two if I tolerate it well, then add in the Amoxicillin. I have already started Omeprazole to try to dampen down the pains.

How many weeks of tx did youdo Cave?

Sorry you have the h.pylori, it is a miserable beast. I had it last year and it was evil to me.

I did treatment with Prevacid, Amoxicillin and Biaxin for 2 weeks, failed that, did it again for 4 weeks, relapsed again, tried Flagyl + tetracycline + bismuth (pepto bismol) + ranitidine (zantac) and failed that too. Fiannly took megadoses of Biaxin and Amoxicillin plus prevacid, followed by Flagyl and then 2 months of Ketek plus mastic gum and loads of acidophilus. My Igm is still positive but on endoscopy I have no evidence of the infection. Still have GERD and burning pain, now I have colitis on top of that and in lots of pain. GI symptoms are the WORST!

Try triple therapy plus mastic gum, you can buy it from Nutricology online.
I have the linkf for h.pylori on my website.

G'luck!
