someone gave my husband a newpaper clipping of a Seminar in Albany tonight. The Doctors names are
Timothy J.Sellati PHD Assistant Professor in the center for Immunology and Microbial Disease
Elizabeth Higgins MD Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics
Then it says In May 2004 Albany Medical College received a 1.8 million dollar 5-year grant from the National institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease to advanced researcher, Timothy Sellati's PHD research on the underlying cause of chronic Lyme disease. Not that I am not happy about this but I have never heard of the man I hope this is on the up and up. I live only an hour from Albany I think I will call to see if they need any more people....Kim

Well, most of the people funded by the NIH have been Steere disciples. Their job is to prove it is post-infectious and we don't need treatment. It would be surprising, but not impossible, that this guy would be unbiased. I would say there is about 1 chance in a hundred this grant will be used for research that will actually help chronic cases.

Lou...wrong. Would you consider Dr. Fallon of Columbia a Steere man? Fallon's study was N.I.H. funded. The fact that the N.I.H funded this in the first place shows that the concept of Chronic Lyme Disease is more acceptable than in the past.

Dr. Sellati is researching Chronic Lyme with an open mind...using the word Chronic is something Steere would NOT have done in the past.

This study was posted a year ago and involves certain proteins that may or may not enable the Lyme bacteria to become chronic.

We should not take an immediately negative attitude towards Lyme research. I personally know a PHd who promoted Flagyl and Tinidazole, and wants to get a N.I.H. grant as well...is he too in the Post Lyme Syndrome camp? I think not.

Fact is that real research, using real humans and controls, is expensive. The N.I.H. is evolving, with research being the driving force behind the changing attitudes.

Let' see what the Dr. discovers here...hopefully his findings will help us all. This is EXACTLY the type of research we need...why some people develop Chronic Lyme, and why others are seemingly cured with ABX.

Why don't we all call Albany Medical Center and get some answers? Simply because one has not heard of a PhD researcher does not mean anything!!!! Who knows everyone doing research in ANY disipline? Not happy? WHY NOT???? Would you rather no research be done? This disease is very complex, and no single Dr., MD or PHd knows everything.

On the up and up??? What does this mean? Albany Medical Center is a respected Medical Institution, and I am sure the research is being done by qualified people. It is NOT easy to get funded by the N.I.H.

Rest assured that some bogus research as that done by the PhD promoting Benicar is not in the same league as real research at a real institution. I say: The More the Merrier!!!!

Peace, love and wellness,
JRW

Folks...just spoke with Dr. Sellati, something each of you should have done.

I found he is an intelligent, open, REAL person. He is NOT from the Steere camp.

His studies involve mice models at the present, and are investigation a genetic disposition for Chronic Lyme.

Let's hope his study can move on to humans as well.

Here we have someone who is digging deeper...not swimming in the same pool.

Peace, love and wellness,
JRW

Read Page 2. Sounds like this research is focusing on the Immunological response. I believe the basis behind IVIg treatment is also to tame an overactive immune system.

Foggy, you are correct; However, the doctor is looking for a (not the)reason why some of us develop Chronic Lyme, and other do not.

He IS open to possibilities, from my discussion with him, and to date, no one has PROOF, via ANY study, that Chronic Lyme has one, and only one cause. Who knows, we might all be reacting to a low bacterial load, and a nasty immunological response.

We need more research to rule out all possibilities...or verify all causes.

I believe we need to prove or disprove the ongoing infection theory as well as the immunological response issue...or the damaged system theory, etc.

Hell...I don't care WHY I am still sick...I just want someone to be able to TREAT my problem...as I am sure you all do!

Have a good weekend!
