If someone is given a month of IV....is it routine to start the orals immediately after stopping the IV? A relative has been waiting for 2 weeks because the doctor keeps stalling and he is sliding backwards. Just wondered what the usual protocol was. I'm afraid my lyme doc will stall and do more tests, etc before actually prescribing the orals.

Anyone know how well Amoxycillin gets into the spinal fluid and the brain? I probably shouldn't be saying this on the board but I have some leftovers of that.

I just want to say that I am grateful for all the people on this board who many times go out of their way to give helpful advice and so many of you are just so very dear

Margie

Just my own experience: I was started on orals before coming off the IV and continued on orals for four months after that.

In hindsight I should have been on orals even longer than four months after.

Hey Martijn,

``Amoxicillin is an interesting drug in a therapy where doxycycline or minocycline is alternated with amoxicillin and short breaks.''

This is exactly what my doc wants to try next with me...can you elaborate on why it is ``interesting''?

Thanks,
Melanie

Hi Daystar,

I'm so sorry about the delimma your relative is in. I know how frustrating it can be when you feel as if time is wasting while waiting for a doc to prescribe.

But, if you have confidence in this doc, you must believe that he/she has the patient's best interest in mind.

I have to say that I am of the opinion that self medicating is a very dangerous thing to try. Especially in this particular situation.

Yes, I know it is done frequently...but usually by those who are comfortable with a med that they have already used in the past, and usually SELF medicated. NOT, given to someone else.

If I remember correctly, this relative was taken off of Amoxy because of some adverse reactions, correct? IF, you were to give him Amoxy now, it COULD interfere with the docs next protocol...or worse, cause more damage in the long or short run.

I would think very carefully before proceeding...speak with the doc in charge...and weigh your options.

My best,
Melanie

OK...I just found your other post, and re-read it. It looks like his wife(?) put him on Biaxin, and then took him back off again. And now you would like to try Amoxy instead?

This REALLY doesn't sit right with me...
How much longer do you have until the LLMD apt?
