Does it really hurt that much?

Do you get lidocaine mixed in?

Is the needle as big as a straw? A coffee stirrer? A toothpick?

I can only speak for myself and the hubby, but if we do the shots right they rarely hurt.

Some folks do seem to be exceptionally sensitive and have problems with pain radiating up the spinal cord or down the leg. I've experienced the shot area feeling like a big bruise for a day or two afterwards. There's been no scarring as such, but there are a lot of lumps in my butt now that subside very slowly but don't hurt.

Some people also experience serum sickness. Very individual.

We don't get the lidocaine mixed in. What we do is chill our butts with icepacks for about 20 min, warm up the bicillin to body temperature, and do the shot slowly. The sensation usually varies from nothing to a minor prick, and very occaisionally a jab that's worth a yelp.

The needle is as big as howitzer.

FWIW, my experience to date after three injections:

They do not hurt. I'm always amazed to watch the big needle go in, expecting to feel pain, and feeling nothing but pressure.

After the first one, it was pretty sore for a couple of days after. I don't check my backside as a matter of course, but about five days after the first injection, I just happened to catch a glimpse in the mirror as I turned around and saw a big bruise.

The second injection (on the other side) also did not hurt. It bruised, but only a little, and did not hurt as much as the first shot.

The third shot has not bruised and was only mildly tender for the rest of the day. As I rolled over in bed that night, it dawned on me that my backside was not hurting in the process.

I take the syringe out of the fridge a few minutes before injecting to let it warm up a bit, and inject slowly, as I have seen others here suggest.

I know that the search engine does not work well, but this has been discussed a lot in recent weeks, so if you can get to those threads, you will find a lot of information and suggestions from people with a lot more experience at this than me.

Hope that helps,
Suzanne

I have been on bicillan for 5 years and I am not a big person, and still do fine with the shots. My husband gives them to me...sometimes I have a black and blue mark for a day or so but thats the extent of it... I am so used to it now I dont even think about it anymore... I wouldnt worry.
