Hi there! I have been treated for the past 8 months with orals (minocycline+plaquenil, then amoxicilin). It worked great for a while (with most symptoms gone), then I relapsed a bit and having some diffuculties with heart involvement.

My question is: I am trying to get on IV. How do I ask my doc about this: hey, doc, I need IV - please help? I am seeing Dr. J in NC, altough I will be seeing Dr. D as I recently moved to MA.

Also, which IV antibiotics are best for lyme?
Does anybody have experience with any of these two doctors refusing IV antibiotics?

Hmmm, I'm not sure I've ever heard of Dr D using IV, but I know Dr J does it alot.

I also think you can get well on orals. Just keep changing meds so your body doesn't get too used to one.

If you go with IV, I'd recommend Claforan instead of the usual Rocephin. I've read too many stories of relapse after Rocephin and also of patients not being put on flagyl to break up the cysts.

Whatever IV you're put on, should be followed up with orals.

Oops...I overlooked the "heart involvement" you mentioned. Make sure you are treated for babesia. It requires different meds from Lyme meds. To ignore possible babesia is to end up NOT GETTING WELL from the Lyme.

Lymetoo, what are the benefits of Claforan over Rocephin? After talking to the Lyme Association Director up here, I've been thinking that due to insurance, location, etc. I may switch to your doc (and her's), and when I do I may want to go the IV route and was thinking Rocephin. Don't know anything about Claforan. Can you enlighten me/us?

All I know is what I've seen on this board over the past 5 yrs. Lots of relapses on Rocephin....and of course the problems with the gall bladder....and that's pretty severe.

If Claforan does the same thing [and I think it does] then why would anyone want to take Roc? Looks like convenience would be the only advantage.

Thanks for the comparisions and opinions. I do wonder though how many of the relapses though from Rocephin were ones who were not treated w/a cyst busting drug which Rocephin does not do.
