My husband has really painful tail bone - finds it difficult to sit on hard chairs or in the car. I posted on another LD site and found 6 other people with the same problem. So it sounds as if it may indeed be Lyme related. Just to confirm, anyone on this board with the same problem? Does anyone have a theory as to the cause?

I had a painful Tail bone and it turned out to be an infected pilonidal cyst. I waited and it got worse. Ended up in the ER where an MD drained it and put in a few stiches.

I'd run it by your MD.

Also had an inflamed Sacraliliac joint but the pain was mostly lwr back.

A "Butt Doughnut" can be very helpful to take the pressure off the affected area.

I have that. For me it is an old injury that the lyme likes to pick on. I hit the end of my tail bone a number of times as a kid.

I also hate to admit this, but I have trigger points that are present that cause sitting difficult also. The reason I hate to admit is the cause is being in a sitting position in bed a lot that creates the trigger point. For me it is in my left Gluteus Maximus. It can cause pain in the tail bone and on the bony parts that we sit on. A good massage therapist that knows about trigger points could help.

I just bought The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies. Very informative in identifying where the trigger points are and how they can cause referred pain. She also tells how to use a tennis ball to work on these areas. The idea is to get the point to release. It is done by pressure and stroking the area to increase blood flow. Anyway, it is definately worth the money for the book.

Hope your husband feels better soon.
Karen

I have ti sit back i na position so I can crack it several times a day. That amkes it feel better.
Just sit down on the floor and slightly roll back with your tail bone on the floor and the rest of your bod in a curled position.
it helps with the pain.

There is a reactive arthritis that causes an inflammation of the sacroiliac joints at the base of the spine. The tail bone is kind of between those two ponts. It is possible there could be referred pain causing a tender tail bone. It's a type of spondlyoarthritis:

Yes, this is a painful problem for me also. Using one of those doughnut pillows is helpful. Such a pillow/cushion can be purchased in a drugstore that carries medical type supplies. Mine cost around $15.00. I have seen them on the internet also. Also, pain meds are helpful when the pain really gets bad as well as changing positions and getting up and walking around to take the pressure off of that area.

I never had a problem with my tailbone until being infected with Lyme. Last week we added a new antibiotic to my treatment plan and I have noticed an increase in the degree of pain, not to mention other areas of pain and increase of symptoms.

In addition to the condition that Aniek described, I also wonder if some of the pain is nerve related. I also have difficulty lying comfortably on my back because my legs tend to go numb and also the tailbone becomes more painful. Sometimes my husband and I can feel the heat radiating from these problem areas.

I did not experience this symptom in the first year of being sick. However it has been a problem during the last year. While on Rocephin the pain went away, but soon returned after being off Rocephin about one month and has been a problem for the last five months that I have been off Rocephin.

Wishing you and your husband all the best-Debbie/RI

I had/have this problem too.

Mine started when we drove to Branson in a very small, uncomfortable car that we sold when we got back home! Had many treatments on it ... no luck in fixing the pain.

8+ years ago ended up going to physical therapy and she discovered my tail bone was OUT OF PLACE! So she went in & positioned it back where it was supposed to be. Helped tremendously for pain. If I sit too long, it acts up. Good luck.
