I'm an Optometric Physician, not an arthritis doctor. I understand that this drug may be the only relief for some arthritis sufferers. Many of my patients take it and are referred to me by their MD's for periodic vision examinations, most every 6 months because of the many retinal problems this drug can cause. Please be aware of the many vision problems Plaquenil can bring about, some of which are delayed even after discontinuing it. There's a reason arthritis doctors routinely recommend vision examinations every 6 months for patients on this drug.

The vision examinations for Plaquenil patients are also more extensive and therefore more expensive.

Now the good news. I've been in practice for 30 years and conducted hundreds of Plaquenil examinations. I've suspected vision loss in only two patients taking the drug during that time.

The longer you take it and the higher your dose, the greater the likelihood that you'll suffer vision problems from it.

Here's an informative link.

Thank you for this information. I am not on Plaquenil, but my mother is, so I will advise her to get biannual checkups.

You forgot to include the link. Could you post it?

Thank you,
Suzanne

Thank you for the info. My daughter was on Plaquenil for 6 months and we had her baseline eye exam done as per her opthamologists referral.

That doc only recommended full testing annually at this time.

Does the frequency depend on the patient? Dosage? Length of time on the Plaquenil?

Thanks,
Sherry

Jim,

This is on a slightly different topic, but it is vision related. What is your professional opinion of the VCS (Visual Contrast Sensitivity) test or it is sometimes called a FACT test I think. See http://www.chronicneurotoxins.com/info/vision_rationale.cfm

One of the first Lyme symptoms my hubby had was what he calls fuzzy vision -- he was having difficulty reading the newspaper. He has failed the VCS every time he has taken it -- changes in eyeglass prescriptions and the use of eye gel for dry eyes have not helped.

Jim,

Thanks for the info. I hate watching for the little red light, but it's worth it to keep my full vision.

Do you have any experience with medical plans (not vision plans) covering the tests as medically necessary since they are due to a medicine?
