really? I had NO IDEA that probiotics could really cause gas.

Why? / how?

I thought you couldnt over do it with them, especially when you're on ABX long term.

How do you decide what is causing your gas?

confused,

I have asked Garden of Life in the past and they indicated gas can occur with probiotics, largely at the beginning or use. Some quotes from searches I just did:

When large doses of probiotics are first taken, mild gastrointestinal symptoms may occur.

If you don't ramp up slowly, the sudden presence of the bacteria can cause gas.

It is all about balance and moderation.

I'd switch probiotics. Sounds like it's just not agreeing with you. Some probiotics make me sick, others work great. Just depends.

Since you cause a die-off of candida and other undesirables by using probiotics, which is really what you want, they will have to leave the body in one form or another. Part of it is gas. Part leaves via other channels. Maybe take a bit less at the beginning until you have killed off some of the overgrowth.

Take care.

still confused...probiotics dont KILL the candida...they just replace the good stuff, I thought.
[confused]

I am killing the candida via caprylic acid and occassional nystantin and diflucan, but I dont really see a yeast problem as of yet. (cross your fingers for me)

I have begun taking digestive enzymes with SOME meals and that seems to help.

strange fact about this gas: It ONLY occurs after my dinner, not during ANY other meal times. And I am NOT taking any ABX then. I do take psyllium before dinner with 16 oz of water, but I have done that for almost 4 years straight now...in fact this is the LEAST psyllium I have EVER had to take to stay regular coz I had the endo surgery and had the adhesions cut out of my abdomen. It has never caused gas in the past.

Last night I tried beano with my dinner and it did NOTHING.

Still confused.

trails, you mentioned in a previous post that you were looking into FOS. For some people, FOS will cause intestinal distress. It is a fungal byproduct, and anyone who is sensitive to mold will react to it. I myself cannot tolerate it, and am very careful to make sure my probiotics don't contain it.

It can cause the gas you are talking about, as well as other problems. Just something to think about.

Yeah, you know what river...that is the ONE variable that I have been honing in on with the gas. I mean, there is the ABX, the yeast, and then the fact that I started putting FOS into my water when I take the probiotics. All these are the new things that could be causing the gas.

I was reading about gas and it is caused by undigested food particles. FOS is INDIGESTABLE.

But it DOES seem to be the key to not getting the yeast as I have in previous treatment times.....

what to do?

Do you have any info on FOS triggering gas/ being mold/ making people sick?

Thanks for helping me slowly get to the BOTTOM of this...hahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

trails, I don't have anything formal. The FOS is listed on my no mold diet because it is a fungal by product. Can't remember what moldy stuff is used to produce it. Lots of food additives are fungal byproducts. Some people have no problems, but others do. The info on the gas issues are from folks on my list, as well as personal experiemce. [Embarrassed]

Hmmm.... yeast is a problem. What kind of probiotic are you using? Maybe you need to experiment with a different kind. Everybody seems to have different faves that work for them.
