I have just finished with my 5th month of IV abx therapy and started on oral omnicef & biaxin with a monthly pulse of flagyl. I was dx with POTS before the lyme and my doc thinks that the lyme caused the dysautonomia. Anyway, I have had these adrenaline rushes for about the last five years. I used to get them about once every 6 months and recently I have been having them every day on and off all day for the past three weeks. My bp stays the same, but my pulse goes up to about 120-160. Yesterday this happened and right after my skin burned like a sunburn and I was twitching all night in my sleep. Also, I get an OH S**T feeling right before the tachycardia and my vision gets very sensitive as well as my hearing. My husband sneezed last night and I jumped about 2 feet off of the bed. I have been waking up with nausea too. Also, I really feel physically sick all over. I have had a full cardiac workup and it is just sinus tachycardia. All my bloodwork is fine except for the lyme titer, of course. Does anyone think I am herxing? Can you herx this far into treatment? I am really scared you guys and would really appreciate any similar stories.

Thanks,
tidegal

Hi tidegal-

Sorry that you are having such reactions to something!

It has been my family's experience that anytime there is a dose or medication change herxing can occur.

I herxed when I changed from rocephin to tetra. Recently after 2.5 years of oral abx I was switched to diflucan, I herxed again. More mildly but herx none the less. I herxed the most for about 6-8 months when I went from IV to orals. My herxing was different from your symptoms and milder, mostly stiffness.

The sunburned feeling is a common reaction to doxy and tetra, ot
the family of abx as biaxin. I thought biaxin should have less reactions, but everyone is different.

I hope you get some more answers.

Mel

Hi,

It is thought that IV antibiotics send the Borrelia in to a cystic state where the body can not detect it. You don't say how long you've been off IV.

The flagyl is a cyst buster so that may have something to do with your reaction as well.

I didn't herx until after about a year on abx. It happened when I switched from biaxin to tetracycline. The burning could also be what's called flushing and is a symptom of Bb.

If you can't deal with it, call your doc to see if you can take a break. Stopping abx for a few days usually fixes the problem. That's when I really know if I'm herxing or not.

Take care,

Corgilla

I agree! Definitely sounds like you're herxing. you can herx at any time. And we just had a full moon which can also affect herxing.

I have tachycardia too so I feel for you. Do you take a beta blocker?
