Okay. I know that I am to avoid alcohol with Tindamax. I know it's like Flagyl and can cause an Antabuse-type reaction with alcohol. I don't drink, so THAT'S not a problem. I don't use alcohol-based mouthwashes, either (too drying).

What about alcohol in cooked food? I've always heard that the alcohol actually cooks out. I'm afraid, though.

And what about asthma inhalers? I assume that there's no alcohol in the propellant, but I don't know. I may need to ask the pharmacist. Cooking sprays often contain grain alcohol. I wonder about them, too. And lip balms.

Is it only ethyl alcohol that's the problem? Does anyone know? I'm so afraid of the Antabuse reaction.

I know that vinegar is safe. I've asked about this before. I figured fermentation was the problem, but vinegar is metabolized differently.

I'd appreciate any input from Tindamax/Flagyl users. I want to start tomorrow.

I was concerned about the alcohol that is in the homeopathic tinctures because there is actually quite a bit in them, but my Dr said that it was still a very small amount comparatably to having an alcoholic drink, and that it shouldn't be a problem. So I went ahead and did it, and didn't have a problem at all.

Your liver can still detox small amounts of alcohol while on these drugs. The problem is with having a significant amount of alcohol, like a beer or a glass of wine, and that is what can cause you a big problem. But still, there are some people that can handle this. Then there are some that would end up in the hospital if they took a drink.

I wouldn't be concerned about a small amount of alcohol that didn't get completely burned off in cooking, or a teeny weeny amount in mouthwashes and inhalers that might get into your system. Your body should be able to handle such a small amount.

Thanks, Micul, for sharing this information.

Yeah, I guess it's a problem with larger amounts of alcohol because they both get metabolized through the same pathway. I guess the drug can build up to toxic levels, and that's what causes the profuse vomiting, etc.

I may have to be extra careful, though. I'm a slow metabolizer of some things, and I have many sensitivities. Once, I did have a microwave meal with wine in it, and I was taking Flagyl. I did have nausea (not vomiting, though) and some facial flushing.

I definitely would need the inhaler, though!

Alcohol usually gets cooked out of food. just the flavor is left behind.

I recently had white clam sauce that had white wine. No problemo.

I did switch my mouthwash to the new crest non alcohol. I like it.

Heather: I've heard good things about that mouthwash! I may get it. I can't use alcohol-based ones, anyway, because they are too drying.

Yeah, hubby said that the alcohol does cook out. It was weird, though. When I was taking Flagyl, I had something cooked with wine, and I did get nausea and flushing, but no vomiting. I think I'll be extra cautious.

I didn't start today as planned because I was having severe nausea (possibly before-period Herxing; having other increases in symptom intensity, too). I will start Monday, hopefully. I am meeting an old friend on Sunday, and I'll be more active than usual. I don't want to feel any worse!
