My wife has developed these strong hiccups that keep her up at nights. It started about 3-4 days ago. Has anyone else had these annoying things and how did you stop them?

Here's a cure the guy says is guaranteed.

Tilt your head back just enough that your neck is stretched a little bit. Inhale and hold a deep breath. Take 7-8 sips of water or similar non-carbonated beverage. Exhale and discover your hiccups gone.

I found drinking from the far side of a glass of water is helpful. Bend over and hold the glass with your chin in the glass and drink slowly.

I have not heard of the hiccups as a particular Lyme disease symptom, but I wouldn't be surprised as it can effect the nerves all over your body and might be causing the diaphram spasms.

I wish I had an answer for you. My husband and son have hiccups as a herx. One evening (he-he) my husband had the hiccups so heavily I thought he might pass out. They lasted for about an hour, one on top of the other.

It wasn't funny while it was happening, but we laugh about it now.

Suggest a good absorbable form of Magnesium. Like Calm.

You can also carry with you the Schuessler Salts below and take them whenever necessary.

"Hiccups is a spasmodic contraction of the muscles of the diaphragm closing the throat, resulting in a sudden shutting off of breath. It is brought about by an irritation of the nerves which serve the diaphragm, usually following some digestive upset. Overeating, or too rapid eating, sometimes brings on an attach, especially children."

Quite inexpensive at any good healt food store:

Schuessler Salts:
Mag. Phos. - taken with a bit of hot water
Nat. Mur. - for hiccups after hasty eating. Alternating with Mag. Phos.if the spasm persists.

My 5 year old granddaughter used to get them periodically. The Schuessler salts fixed it for her. You might need the Magnesium as a supplement or get one that is better absorbed if you are already taking one. Muscle Spasms!

Take care.

A long time ago, I read of a cure for hiccups:
Eat a spoonful of sugar, swallow it dry.

That did help sometimes.

Another way to relieve hiccups would be a low dose of Dilantin (Phenytoin). 50 to 100 mg. should do it. (Epileptics take about 400 mg. doses of this.)

I found the info about Dilantin in the book, "A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked," by Jack Dreyfus. Available at Amazon.com, used, for a ridiculously low price.

Does the wife use any form of sedatives to sleep?

I dont typically have hiccoughs but sometimes the sleep medications I take (like klonopin or lunesta) induce bouts of night-hiccoughing.

Slow sips of water, almost constant sipping will stop them....of course you can quit sipping when they're gone [Wink]
