I read someone's post on here, who researched and found that the herb Samento [which is similar to the Quinolone family of abx], might cause the same types of side effects. I had ordered Samento and haven't used it, strictly because of the possible side effects. I have been on Levaquin for a UTI in the past, and could not handle its side effects.
Also, my family has a history of dementia in their older ages, and the same individual [believe it was Tree], stated that there has been some studies done which show that the Quinolone family can create toxicity which can lead to dementia. This is another reason I've held off on the Samento.
Does anyone know about this?

Well--the synthetic quinolones can certainly cause dementia

Not so sure about Samento per se, but someone did
post a while back that some German researchers found that
it promoted Bb growth in vitro. Not sure if they ever published,
but it was enough to get me to abstain from using it.

I took samento before I was officially diagnosed with lyme. It made me really sick and I could not take more than 5 drops 2X per day and it took me months to build up to that.
I've been on levaquin for about 5 weeks. No problems so far aside from terrible bart herxes.
I'm pretty sure that Buhner say's that samento is not going to have the same affect as the quinolones but I've seen rumors in various places that they are similar. I simply don't know.
edited to add: My Naturopathic Doctor said you won't get much benefit from samento if you have untreated babs. I had untreated babs and samento just made me worse.

Samento is NOT the same as Cat's claw. Cat's claw is the natural herb form, which Buhner recommends in his book. Samento has been genetically modified in some way I cannot recall, though I read it on a previous post. I've read some scary things about Samento - I'd stay away from it. I am, however, taking Cat's claw.
