One of my worst herx reactions seems to be diahrrea. Does anyone else have this? Any tips for controlling it when OTC's arent enough?

Thank-you for bringing up this truly crappy topic!
Yes, I have had this for 7 weeks straight. I am on IV Rocephin, and 1500 mg Flagyl every day.
They tested me for D. diff. but was negative.

Last week I came down with bronchitis, a sinus infection and a UTI. I don't think I have to tell you what happens everytime I cough, sneeze, etc.
I am SO sick of this! My LLMD says to take
immodium.

I'm hoping someone comes up with something better,
and I appreciate your bringing up this subject.
Best of luck to you,
Jill

The symtopm you mention is very familiar to me. I have it as part of a symptom cascade on each symptom cycle. It last for a few days at a time and is VERY severe. I have had this for a few years, although it getting better as treatment progesses.

The "normal" drugs for this don't work for me. Stuff like codine will slow things down a bit but are really only used if you have severe pain with the problem (which is no longer a problem for me).

I have found that the best thing to do is to eat things that have a high water absorption. Things like melba toast, popcorn or even just regular toast. These seem to add bulk to the fluid and help alot. They should not be used long term if you are on heavy antibiotics as they will promote a yeist problem. But for a few days they seem to be ok for me.

When the problem is particulalry bad extreme hygene should be exercised after each "sitting" since the fluid can become very irritating and if an abrasion occurs for what ever reason it will be EXTREMELY BAD in term of pain. Best thing to do is buy some "baby wipes" for the episode, they help immensly.

Also do not eat spicey foods. The "hot" spices pass through with little alteration and complicates the problem of irritation.

My appologies to those that do not like graphic descriptions but this is the way it is.

good luck

It isn't a yeast problem; I have been fanatical about following the low carb diet, taking probiotics, etc., and just got good candida test results. Mine is either from flus or from herxing, or abx, or all 3. I understand that viruses often reside within bacteria, so it makes sense that killing off lyme bugs would release flus...and most of mine seem to be stomach flus. Ugh!

In desperation, I recently started taking both Immodium and Kaopectate together, but I don't know if this is an acceptable thing to do and I forgot to ask my doctor. Individually, neither of them is adequate.

I agree with David about the hygeine thing, but all the hygeine in the world won't heal the irritation caused by ten million trips to the john! I have found that a bit of OTC hydrocortizone ointment at the... uhm, shall we say 'ejection site' helps somewhat. But I get it so bad that I'm afraid I'm gonna end up in the emergency room one of these days.

Now you know the gruesome details. Sure glad we don't use real names here!

I've had diarrhea since 1979 after my gallbladder was removed. I've lived in bathroom.

Misdx for 34 yrs., so it's only since 6-04 that I've known I have chronic lyme. I occasionally have bread.

Sugar, until my diabetes 2 dx 6 mo. prior to my chronic lyme dx, I never thought about it. I have curtailed my sugar, but my sweet tooth gets in the way now & then.

This is my real name too.

Diarrhea is the # 1 symptom of c.diff (clostridium difficile toxin infection.) You get it from the antibiotics when your normal bowel flora is destroyed. Get a stool test for c.difficile toxins A& B and if positive, you must stop all antibiotics and go on Flagyl or vancomycin. Immodium is bad to take when you have c.difficile because it prevents the toxins from leaving your body and paralyzes the bowel. Get this checked out so you are not self medicating. Email me if you want info.
