I'm probably an old timer here by now (treating Babs+Lyme since 2003) but I am starting to get difficulty tolerating Artemesinin - whilst on Biaxin + Mepron.
I am nearly 5 months into the course and the brain fog/confusion from even 200mg Artmesinin is impossible to cope with. Now after that when I take Artemesia it has a similar, if milder effect. It does go away if I stop and just take the Mepron/Biaxin but then the other Babs symptoms get worse.
Has anyone had similar? I could tolerate this okay before. Is it a herx or neurotoxicity??
Any similar experiences or advice appreciated thanx Emma

Hi Emma! I dont have an answer for you--but I noticed that you were on the thread about Larium that I just researched. Did you ever use it?
Looks like you are a relapsing babe (babs) too!
Also thought I would pull your question to the top.
Hello old timer! Trails

I will do like most docs do, guess. My guess is that you are overtoxxed by now.
I just got done taking Artemisinin tonight.
I took it for about two weeks last month, at 600mg a day. Then stopped for two weeks.
THEN this past weekend I went on it for three DAYS at 1200mg. OF COURSE I took RED ROOT tincure anlong with it to clear the toxins out of my lymph system. That is SUPER important. Hope you are doing the same.
I don't think I really have Babs. As the only real side affects I got was face numbing, and tingling in my right arm plus SUPER tired all day and night. My normal 5 hours of sleep didn't cut it.
I took a total of 300mg of Artemisinin today just to finish the bottle.
I also took ONE Yohinbe Bark capsule today, and all day I was feeling REALLY weird. Face was very hot, and I felt like I could have a stroke or something like it at any moment, but didn't. Also very woozy.
Then about 8 p.m. tonight, my vision all of a sudden got super good again. It hadn't been that good since I started abx along with my herbs for the past couple of months.
I am not sure WHY it got so good all of a sudden again. Although I had been out of Cat's Claw for almost a week, and took one this evening. But I didn't think it could work THAT fast.
I am going to stay away from the Yohimbe Bark pills for awhile, as they seemed to cause a head problem a month or so ago when I took a couple, also. I will just take a Yohimbine WHEN I need it a couple times a week. And see what happens.
I have NOT had Mepron or Biaxin though, so can't tell what would be your symptoms using that combo with the Artemisinin Artemisia doesn't work as strong as the Artemisinin anyway. It does help but you have to get more aggressive in the use of it to do the job.
I am wondering WHY you are on Artemisinin so LONG anyway? The preferred protocol seems to be a HIGH DOSE for only three days, both in this country and in the Orient. Then if necessary another 3 day HIGH DOSE after being off it for two weeks.
Sorry my message read as if I'd be on this indefinately...I did about a yr of Mepron+Azith+Artemesia from 2003-2004 then relapsed 7 months later when I was 'trying' the MP (bad move).
I then stopped the disastrous MP, had three bottles Mepron + Biaxin + Artemsia and the symptoms went apart from breathlessness then 4 months later I got a virus and the Babs relapse hit me like a truck - couldn't breath, chest pain, heart palps, suffocation feelings even walking across the room.
This time I have been on it 5 months and am still breathless.
I am now okay on Artemesia so I'm sticking with that! I hae no idea why I cannot tolerate the Artemesinin even at 200mg daily tho!
Jimbob: My European Babesia is very agressive and our european LLMD believes it cannot be eradicated! I haven't done the red root, maybe could be dangerous with the Mepron etc.
Trails: Hi! No I have never used Larium - too scared.
I cannot say for sure IF there would be any reactions with the Red Root and with Mepron. I can attest that Red Root is SUPER important for cleaning and keeping your lymph system in GOOD working order. THAT in itself would keep your herxes to a bare minimum.
I am NOT a doctor, so YOU will have to research it for yourself.
I only know what I have read. And WHAT I have used on MYSELF, and what results I have had with different medications.
For MYSELF, I am getting more and more down on abx. I realize they DO have a place in treating these hideous diseases, but as your doctor states, he doesn't even think THEY will CURE the Babesia.
SO, IF that is REALLY true, WHAT have you got to lose, trying an alternative protocol?
In MY estimation, nothing. AND you MAY just have everything to gain. It is pretty much the educated norm, that IF you don't get rid of Babesia, you will probably not be able to get rid of Lyme.
WHAT makes him THINK Babesia canNOT be eradicated? Maybe HE needs more education?!?!?!
Since Artemisinin and Red Root are the preferred way to get rid of Babesia, why not DO THAT, along with a really good regimen of herbs for the Lyme and its symptoms and then feel much better WHILE you are treating for the diseases in an aggressive method.
True, most insurances do NOT pay for herbs in treatment, but you might note that herbs are much cheaper to use than are most abx.
Naturally most ducks don't prescribe the herbs, (because they don't make any money off of them), but so what. WHO EVER PROVED that prescribed drugs are the best and only way to go?
Sure there have been scare tactics used by their organizations to keep the uninformed from using them. But THAT does not make it Correct or right, right?
I didn't realize you were from Europe when I sent my previous post. I don't always read the line where it states where we are from. Sorry about that. I realize there are some differences in the strains of bugs from this country to yours, and that Red Root is an American Indian herb. But nevertheless, it IS a good one.
There are NO side effects noted from Red Root. However, it IS contraindicated IF pregnant or if taking blood coagulants or anitcoagulants. IF Mepron has any of those attributes, then I would say IMO that you should not use it. Otherwise, it is an excellent NATURAL medication to use for a healthy Lymph system, including: Lymph Nodes, liver, tonsils, spleen and appendix.
I would also take Sarsaparilla for cleansing your blood and milk thistle for your liver. Sure wouldn't hurt to take Acidophilus also to HELP replace some of the GOOD bacteria that your abx destroy. Balance is key here. Abx are not noted to keep balance in your system.

He Emma, where are you in Europe?
I'm having THE toughest time with artemisinin ever. I'm not first timer there (took it quite a few times before, after Riamet).
I decided to take it again without any other drugs together because 2 days ago I was so chilly I could barely think. I could only think "artemisinin", my hands were purple and frozen. I took it but then started having air hunger and dizziness, feeling like drugged. I took 300mg at once, then increased to 400mg 3x day, empty stomach.
My body temperature got warmer almost immediately, could sleep well, felt very tired, got some headache, I'm sure I still have babesia.
I'm in Switzerland, babesia is said to be rare, never heard it's even more dangerous than the American babs!? Could you clarify?
Did you do any tests to confirm?
I didn't take artemisinin for about 6 weeks, because I thought babesia was dead. Wrong. I feel now I'm fighting basically babesia, not really lyme... My main lyme symptom was arthritis and that is gone, now I have 'only' babesia symptoms (chills, heart pressure, now air hunger for the first time).
I'm waiting for a few stuff to come from the US, red root included, plus neem (said to fight babesia), but I'm afraid I have to return to the doctor ask him Riamet again or some antibiotic. He wont' prescribe anything long term, I'm sure.

Boy, Selma, you haven't got your Red ROot YET?
WOW, I don't think I would take the Artemisinin without the Red Root. Then you have to make it into a tincture IF you are getting it in bulk. Or did you order the tincture already made in the 1 oz. bottles?
IF so WHERE did you order it from and HOW LONG AGO?
Please don't take the Artemisinin, HIGH DOSE, until you get the Red Root.
I took some Artemesia annua without the Red Root, but only low doses, and the whole herb is different than the extract. Tkaes alot more to work, AND to have problems with.
You ARE taking a lot of Milk THistle too, right? AND also Sarsaparilla?
I have done LOTS of Artmesinin in the past and still I have Babesia I'm afraid. Both Dr M in Europe and Dr B believe Babesia goes dormant with successful treatment. These are bone marrow infections ..I do not think eradication is possible.
Selma - Babesia is not rare, just that the authorities in all these countries cannot test for it. The hospital doc here told me we cannot get babesia in Scotland, yet a gov research group said that Babesia was in ticks in Argyll in 1989, where/when I was bitten. I am in whitehead, Northern Ireland nowadays.
