Hi everyone, I am very interested to see if anyone has input on Levaquin (antibiotic) I have lyme and bartonella. I have been on Biaxin and Bactrim for 4 months. I yes have herxed at times felt better then lots of new symptoms. I am sure that is common. My FNP would like to switch me to Levaquin. The thing is I am scared about the side effects. I would be interested to hear about anyone's experience good or bad. I am ill enough and scared of the tendon rupture side effect. Rare but enough to catch my attention. I have heard of permanent damage and can't be too be in more pain. I would be excited to get the metal taste out of my mouth from the Biaxin. But is it worth the risk to try this medicine? I soooooo trust my FNP it is just that my luck hasn't been the best so I am afraid I would be one of the rare folks that would suffer for side effects.
Thanks for listening.
Debbie

hi debbiec,
there have been several discussions of late. you can do a search for them putting in the word, levaquin.
i was on it several months ago for a very short time since i developed a sore ankle. my llmd pa took me off it and stated that several of her patients responded this way, but that the doctor and the other pa, did not have patients with these reactions.
several months down the road i have an ocassional soreness in the back of the ankle, but not like it was.
don't know what to tell you. if it happens, you can go off of it quickly. it shouldn't be permament if you stop medication quickly. just my opinion. obviously, not a doctor.
good luck and welcome to lymenet

I responded extremely well to Levaquin. I switched to Levaquin after Biaxin as well. I had muscle and tendon pain, but it was nothing new. Just more extreme. That has been my constant symptom, so if I herx, I get pain.
I did take it easier with exercise while on it. I do yoga, and wouldn't push too much, being weary of tendons.
I actually want to go back on it. I never tested positive for Bartonella, but my LLMD thinks I have it. Waitig for Igenix test results. We think we stopped the Levaquin too early, because my symptoms were some diminished but have returned.

Levaquin did NOTHING for Bartonella for me, except cause me severe tendon damage, which took about a year to finally get rid of. So even if you only do mild exercise or walk, it should be a concern.
Lots of folks here have had better luck in eliminating Bartonella with Rifampin (myself included).
