Did anyone else see "Summer Exposure" on Discovery Health Channel? I watched it last night and was so angry by the time it was over I had to take some breaths and count to 100.

It was all about the Tularemia outbreak on Martha's Vineyard in 2000 and subsequent summers.

I guess what got me is the fact they had this bacterial illness that they knew very little about other then it kills and yet the CDC let people leave the island and others come back on it.

They knew one man died and yet hundreds of potential carriers of the illness were permitted to leave the island after their vacations and possibly infect others on the mainland.

As well, they know that Babesia, Lyme and Ehrlichia exist there in huge numbers but because Babesia only seems to kill those without a spleen or who are not healthy to begin with then they don't talk about it.

I know these bacteria are present elsewhere but the highest percentages of their presence are on Nantucket and M.V. - yet there is no huge story about it.

I know it is driven by money - I think it is disgusting.

I wished I had never gone to Nantucket...I know in my heart that the emergency room where I lived in MA had to have seen tons of cases similiar to mine yet they blew me off and acted like I was crazy.

I realize these bacterial illnesses exist even here in the South where I live now. It just disturbs me that the CDC only is concerned when it spreads fast and kills with in days.

It isn't their concern when it kills slowly and only ruins the quality of lives.

Babesia, Lyme, and Ehrlichia are public health threats - but they are treated like dirty secrets that must not be spoken of.

Never mind that my insurance company paid out a lot more when I still didn't have the true diagnosis of tick borne illness...in scans, endoscopies, colonoscopies, barium CT scans, the list goes on...

It is just so disturbing to me...just when I think mentally I have accepted the lunacy of how these bacterial illnesses have been downplayed and literally pushed down politically I see a show like last nights and it just rekindles my anger and idealistic drive to not take this lying down.

Last night was movie night here and my husband and I were supposed to enjoy a quiet evening...instead I cried my eyes out for a half and hour and raged at the idiocy of the whole state of affairs.

I am doing what I can - have helped start an organization down here in NC - partnering with the very strong support group that exists down here.

I will not give up on this no matter how well I am. Truth always reigns in the end...

I know what you mean. Finding out that science is not being pursued in the truthful way it should....is very disillusioning.
