I've been on abx treatment for lyme about 10 weeks now. I've had a host of symptoms over the last many years that eventually resulted in a diagnosis through a LLMD early this year. Within the last 2 weeks I've developed new symptoms, deep seated muscle pain in my arms (localized) and some burning/shooting pain from shoulder to hands. Has anyone had anything similar, could this be a side effect of treatment??

Welcome lymeguy to the board.
You are HERXING! My right arm felt like a punching bag for the first 19-20 months. Just this past month, that pain has gone away to be replaced by other things.
Go to TREEPATROL'S NEWBIE LINKS at the top of medical. Print it off...his links & check mark as you read them...MONTHS of readng there. He updates this regularly so take a look at what he's added by going to his LAST POST on last page.
Print off Dr. B's 2005 lyme treatment guidelines found in Tree's links! Crucial. You will learn a lot there. Herxing is discussed too.
I normally post a welcome newbie links, short one too, but I lost it all lately, and trying to recreate it WITHOUT retyping it.
Glad you found us for 24/7 educatonal/support!

It is always difficult to tell whether new symptoms indicate a herx resonse to treatment, or whether it is the natural progression of your illness.
If a symptom persists, it is always good to check in with your doctor. Sometimes you may need an adjustment in your treatment. Also, other problems can come up that are not caused by Lyme, and should not be ignored.
I have had a lot of muscle/nerve pain throughout my treatment. Some has been aggravated by particular medications. Sometimes I took various meds to help with the pain, but I also see an osteopath regularly for adjustment, and do very easy yoga to keep things moving.

My LLMD said Ehrlichia, in a long term, affects muscles.
I have tested positive for Ehrlichia after three weeks of Doxy, while it had been borderline before I started on Doxy.
She said Ehrlichia caused "Myositis" and muscle spasm.
Also, I am positive for salmonella, and she said it would cause Reactive Arthritis, affecting just about every part of the body.
Tendonitis, Bursitis, Fascitis, Costochondoritis (chest wall), Spondilitis (spine), Sacroilitis, and Enthesitis (causes bone spurs/bone pain)are part of Reactive Arthritis, she said.
I have been having deep muscle pain in my arms and shoulders as well as legs.
While I had these symptoms before the treatment started, they seem to be intencified and come all together, making me and my doctor think this is Herxing.
Take care. shizuko

Thanks. I've definately done a lot of research and appreciate all the info I can get. I'm familiar with the general side effects of treatment but was curious if anyone had similar issues as me. I've had a myriad of health issues prior to Dx which had waxed and waned over the years but were pretty baseline. Since stating treatment my body's really been having problems but as I understand that's to be expected.

Any chance you take Levaquin or another quinoline abx? The quinoline family can cause tendon damage. But your symptoms can also be from Lyme or coinfections.
Muscle pain is one of my worst symptoms. Overall it has gotten better during treatment. But it got worse since I started Flagyl.
I have pain that comes from muscles tight in my shoulder area that radiate into my arms. I do sometimes have pain in my upper arm, but for me it's usually shoulder, hand and wrist.
I take a muscle relaxer, Flexeril, to control the pain. For me, the pain was constant for two years, hence the need to control it. I also worked with a physical therapist to relax the muscles and then to strengthen. I was very weakened from the pain.

I was changed to Biaxin a week ago. I also have horrible shoulder, neck pain and it's hard to lift my arms up. It's bad enough to cry.

Answering the question above, I'm taking Minocycline and Biaxin. The soreness and pain I mentioned at the start of the post all started 3 weeks into taking Biaxin.

I had deep burning pain in my leg and feet muscles when I started Biaxin. It was horrendous and no drugs touched it.
