It sounds like people are on abx for years and once they are taken off of them they are very likely to relapse. Is this the case?

I'm worried about the long term effects of being on abx for years.

Thanks,
Cutie

It depends on so many factors. Yes, I know people that had Lyme for years and are now very well. That does not mean "cured" and may require ongoing focus on health and wellness beyond the average person would need to do. At a minimum, most people improve, but as you note, it often takes long-term therapy.

You should be more concerned about NOT treating the Lyme and what it will do to your body if left untreated.

I took abx for more than 4 yrs and I didn't relapse when I went off.

Yes, there are people who completely recovered.
I personally know some.

This board however, attracts mainly chronic cases.

ALSO IMPORTANT:

"Bulldog Tenacity", don't give up. Know that with the "cure" will come suffering. Oh yes, there are down and depressing days, but being able to get back up and rejoice that you are taking tiny steps to toward wholeness and healing is vital. A healing that you could never have imagined... from the inside out.

Never say, "I don't have this disease" , but acknowledge it, read about it, talk about it, seek it's cure.

There will also come a great joy at what you have learned and been able to apply to your life and others. Character building for sure.

Take one day at a time.

Give up control of your life and lay it at the feet of The Most High God. Almost sounds like an oxymoron doesn't it? Be tenacious but lay down control? Having to have control of everything in our lives will impede healing.

To gain life we have to lay it down sometimes.

This is what I have personally learned in my struggle for 5 years now.

Still struggling. Still falling down sometimes. Rejoicing that after a "fall" I can still get up and shout...."I made it through that dark and scary time." By the Grace of God I go on!!!!

But mostly I hate watching my wife go through this.

And thinking it was my gift to her.

Yes people do get better.

I have seen many names come and go over the years... far too many for me to remember.

Don't loose hope.

My opinion as someone who has lived with lyme disease 18.5 years or so is the same as lymetoo's

the long term abx has caused much less problems than the the disease has (especially since it was left untreated at least 13 years)

I have found that holding on to hope is really important so dont give up.

Best wishes

Many get cured, many do not. A lot depends on HOW soon after contracting lyme that you got treated and HOW.

AND not everyone responds the same to different treatments.

I have heard of SOME getting cured on abx only. Especially those that were treated right away. Like my Duck. He has had it twice, but cured both times with 21 days of abx because he caught it early.

In my case I waited 5 months before getting treated and then relapsed. ANd six years later it got real bad.

Abx don't work now. Herbs are helping tremendously. But I'm still not perfect. And maybe i never will be because I am getting old, 64, and old age arthritus, etc., creeping up.

But I know people "cured" on abx/herbs treatment. And others cured on herbs only. So it DEPENDS on WHO you are and WHAT you are treating with. And of course also depends on whether you have just Lyme or some of it's co-infections also.

As long as you are breathing, there is hope. Especially IF you are not afraid to try different things to help.

I strongly believe abx suppress this disease and do not eliminate it. I think that is why so many people relapse when they stop the abx. I was bitten 10 yrs ago and it took 6 mths of abx for me to get "well". Over the next 10 years I developed a miriad of problems I now realize were lyme driven. They didn't stop me from living my life but did keep me going to doctors constantly. None of us ever connected any of it to the lyme.

This time, I am treating the lyme naturally although I am doing so through medical doctors who have moved beyond the world of abx only. This is not a simple regimen, but it is the belief of my doctors and my hope that by building a hostile environment for the lyme and other enemies of the body and by strengthening my immune system, I will eliminate the disease rather than suppress it.

It does me good mentally to know I am building up my health and not destroying it with toxic drugs.

Having said all this, please know I would not be against a short-term of abx if the doctor felt it would benefit. I'm happy to work with doctors who are trained in both allopathic and holistic medicine.

I am responding very well to this treatment just as I did to the abx 10 yrs ago. Only time will tell if I get completely well and I will have to die before we can say the cure was permanent.

Yes, I believe you can regain your health, IF first one is lucky enough to find a Lyme physician who can zero in on the complexities of the particular manifestations of this bacteria in an individual, and then successfully treat them.

In our support group we have had many go back to working full-time after years of suffering because they went undiagnosed and/or misdiagnosed. As it has been said before, treating with antibiotics is only one part, the immune system must be rebuilt, and the damage that has been done must be addressed. Not impossible, but requires commitment by the individual to be disciplined in their choice of foods, in taking their supplements, exercising, and attempting to avoid as much stress in their lives as possible. Stress is a killer!
