Help...I need someone to try and pinpoint what may be wrong. I see my LD on Thursday. I have been on antibiotics since 02/05. I first started with Doxy but when I started going downhill again they switched me to Ceftin in April or May. I have been on Ceftin now for almost 10 months.

LD recently decreased my dosage to 500 mg instead of 1000 mg on 12/27/05. Two weeks ago I developed a rash on the side of my left breast that was dark pink, itchy with tiny red bumps. VERY itchy. I went to the Dermo (which was useless by the way) and he gave me Triamcimonlone cream. I then went home and the cream didn't help at all. I then developed it symetrically on the right breast.

Went back to Dermo and he thought it looked like what he deemed as "Contact Dermatitis" or a rash from my detergent or bra. In another words he didn't know what it was!!! He gave me a stronger cream to use called Deximathsone. I used this cream and it seemed to take down the redness but did nothing for the itching!! I have been downing Benadryl. He was going to give me a cortisone shot and do a biopsy but since the redness was down he decided not to do that.

He did do a patch test which was negative for any allergies. He said that the redness being down was a good sign because it looked as if only the top layers of the skin were involved. While I was there I showed him a bruise that I had been itching at a little bit and he didn't seem to think anything of it. I then went home again and it spread. My knee broke out and the outer edge of my elbows. My scalp itches and my back itches terribly with tiny white bumps. It was somewhat worse at night but now I itch alot just whenever. I am SO TIRED of itching. Sometimes My LD was on vacation and I called him to tell me about this rash. So far Dermo doesn't know it spread because i decided to see my LD first before going back to Dermo. Any thoughts? At first hubby and I thought it might be a herx since other than this rash I had been feeling pretty good lately. I don't know why it would be a herx though especially when they reduced my dosage. I think its time they do a skin biopsy or something. I see my LD first this Thursday and will see what he has to say. Maybe its from the antibiotic.

Hi,
I have been itching like you describe for almost 3 years now. It all started with my lyme. Not sure if its bartonella related or not. Then I contracted a secondary strep skin infection on my foot from it.

It is hellish to say the least and I feel for you and completely understand where you are coming from.

bazillion derm appts that were useless! The augmentin xr that I am on currently is working well to keep it somewhat under control but it NEVER goes away.

It is symmetrical all over my body and sometimes covers 70%. Now it is just down to my lowr legs and a little on my back.

I think I may try rifampin next.

Nukegirl,

You can get itchy red rash from systemic yeast infection. My daughter's had bumps also.

These abx make you a sitting duck for yeast.

Diflucan and lomotrin cream have helped.

Its almost like a burning itch underneath. At least thats what it feels like in my breasts. On my back it feels like my skin is so irritated from scratching. Sometimes it does feel like a pinch or sting/bite and then intense itch. I'm going to see doc today. I can't take it anymore. There for awhile I was taking the Probiotic every night and then I stopped taking it just because I was forgetting. Could be nasty yeast but then why wouldn't I be itching in my (private places) where I usually used to get them. I am also paranoid that its some kind of parasite or bug. I just want relief! [dizzy]

I believe I have responded to you before, but wanted to again. Look at bartonella. I too had an extremely itchy rash for months. Mine too also got worse at night. This rash was miserable. I was treated first with 4 months of Levaquin, then 1 month of IV Claforan. It was not until I began taking Rifampin that the rash cleared at all. I too went to the dermatologist and got not satisfaction whatsoever. I did not have a positive bartonella test either, so do not go by the testing and assume you do not have it. Your rash may be something entirely different, however, since it does sound quite similar to mine, I thought I would share. Good luck and feel free to contact me through the private message if you would like to talk.

Hi Nukegirl,

I don't really have any idea, but I used to get hives that were symmetrical on both sides on my body and itched like crazy.

The cream you mentioned though, isn't that a steroid cream? If you have Lyme you should avoid steroid anything.

I hope you find something that helps, and find the cause.

You would think at the Dermatologist should at least know about giving a person with Lyme Disease Sterioidal cream. BTW-what does it do? Is it a medication interacton issue? Just wondering. Rene, thank you for some insight into maybe what is going on with me.

When I get this rash, it's just red and sandpapery like and very itchy on the back of my neck. I use gold bond lotions and it stops the itching.

hey Nuke girl

Sorry to hear about the itching.

You may want to try an over the counter product called "Caladryl" by Parke-davis. Eckerds or walgreens should carry it.

Pink calamine plush anti-itch reliever. It helped me over alot of itchie rash's in the past.

And you can also cook some oatmeal and slather it on.

I have heard of people adding it to the bath but don't remember the recipe for that. I think it was carol from PA..but not sure

Take Care

I've had tiny tiny wildly itchy bumps for 10 years as a result of the disease. I've found topical hydrocortisone cream to be of some limited help.

Best help 3+ years of abx and finally this is not a constant but only an occasional phenomenon.

Keep taking your abx is my best advice. Meanwhile try hydrocortisone cream.

I use aloe gel (100%) on my rashes. I put it on several times through the course of the day at night and before bed and it takes the maddening itching away. Its very cheap - about 8 dollars for a big bottle that will last forever.

Nukegirl,

I have been dealing with symetrical lesions on scalp, shoulders, and buttocks. I have bartonella and it drives me crazy. Lesions hurt but do not itch.

However, I did some research on symetrical lesions a while ago, and I found info relating to syphillis as having symetrical lesions. Can't remember where I found it, but it stated if it was symetrical it was from the ketes.

Anyway, I started to drink a quart of kefir a day(rule of thumb..... what is going on outside of body, is going on inside) I also put kefir in small bowl and added 8-10 more probiotics to it.(let it sit in frig, so it becomes thick)

I applied to lesions and they started to dry up, and took the burning away. I also put on some areas that were itching and it stopped that too. Not to mention how good the cold cream felt. It drys similar to calamyne lotion.

May be a little messy, but well worth it. Whether it's from yeast or infection, the probiotics will help calm things down,

Hope this helps.

I would suspect yeast. People with suppressed immune systems are more prone to getting it. YOu can get yeast on the skin.

Try treating it with an anti-fungal cream. Something like Monistat cream may actually work, but they have better ones for the external yeast.

[You may need a prescription for this...not sure. I know they used to use one for my mother that worked well, but I can't remember the name of it.]

DON'T let them give you a cortisone shot, because it can make all H*** break loose!!... Especially if it's from yeast!

The steroids suppress your immune system even more.

How's your diet?? No sugar?? no bread?? no simple carbs??

Hello Nukegirl,

I'm interested to know if you are on Bicillin LA as I recently had a really bad itchy rash that most likely was a result of the antibiotic ( or what it's mixed with)

The worse itchy I've ever experienced!~

Started over the injection site and then mostly in straight lines which developed in patches...pretty much everywhere else...

Hope you are over it soon-
I survived on Benadryl and used apres suncreams with skin numbing properties to sleep!

I don't think it's common to react this way to Bicillin LA- but always a chance that a batch was contaminated in some way....?

"try not to scratch"
Best- Sarah

Don't overlook scabies, it's easily treatable with a cream and highly contagious, it's a mite that irratates the skin and fairly common.
