My dog was recently diagnosed with lyme disease. My vet gave him 2 weeks of doxycycline 100mg a day. It helped but he was recently bit again and I don't have the money too take him to the vet everytime he gets bit.
I was wondering if theres an easier way that I can get my dog doxycycline without going through a prescription? His symptoms have become worse.

Hi Adjudicator. Do you treat your dog with Frontline or a similar product? This is important.
I suggest calling your vet and telling him/her that your dog was bitten again and still has symptoms. Maybe the vet will extend the prescription since he/she has already seen your dog.

I use k9 advantix. It doesn't work very well. My vet wants another appointment too prescribe him. But they charge over 100$ I know he has chronic lyme disease I want too treat him for a few months.. but the most the vet will give me is 11 pills for a 100$ appointment. Its a hard situation any suggestions?

I know that you can buy antibiotics for birds from poultry supply houses, and that doesn't need a prescription.... maybe the same holds true for meds for other animals?

I did find a website for birds. it says its Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg, Is that the normal doxy? it also says it isn't made for people too take it. Is that true? or do they just say that so people don't buy it for thier own personal use?

Try googling for pigeon supply houses -- there are a couple of sites that spring to mind -- Foy's is one, New England Pigeon Supply is another -- pigeon breeders/racers/etc. use abx all the time to keep infection out of their lofts -- pigeons are prone to bacterial infection if allowed to fly free and interact with other birds.
I think the main reason for the "not for humans" warning is that the drugs are not run through the FDA for use in humans, so they are required to say that. From what I understand, the drugs are basically the same as the ones humans take, though.
I'm not, in any way, advocating the use of these in humans (I know that one of the anti-lyme-propagandists likes to claim that sites like this advocate using animal meds for human consumption!)-- but I think it would be fine for your dog, probably -- just make sure the dosage is correct.

I lost a dog to TBD, before I was diagnosed and was educated about Lyme. My other dog also has been sick from TBD's 3 times. I almost lost him the first time. That was before my diagnosis also.
This is dosing info for doxy I found on a TBD site for dogs ... 10mg per lb per day divided in 2 doses for 6 weeks with food. Example my dog weighs 80lbs so he got 400mg am and 400mg pm. I also gave him acidolphios 2hrs after doxy.
Since the pills from my vet were so expensive I looked online at vet sites. The only doxy I found you needed a rx for a bottle of 500-100mg for about $30.00 I think. I called the vet and asked for a rx. They called back and said they could get it for me for the same price!
Of course he knows I have Lyme and money is very tight with all my drugs.
I would try calling your vet.
They say advantix (sp) works better than frontline for ticks.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog with lyme. I have two myself and love them like my babies.
You could call your vet and ask him about petmed. A company you can call and they call your vet to verify.
k-9 doesn't work. Frontline works for us but is expensive...There is a very cheap place to get frontline, a mail order in Austraila but will have to come back later with the phone #

I woudl say it's time to look for another vet. My older dog has been treated for Lyme twice and they always tell me to call them after the first three or four weeks of Rx run out to let them know how she is.
If I think she still needs more Rx, they just get it ready for me, no exam. You need a vet who is up to date on Lyme. They are not that difficult to find. Much easier than LLMD's!
