There are many of us who cannot tolerate probiotics. For us it is not a herx.

In my case for years they were fine, then they started giving me trouble, and now they are like the scores of foods that make me very ill. It is an immune reaction of some sort, though I am not sure exactly how or what is happening.

Also, just to throw this out there (and to insure my getting flamed) ...

I am not really sure that probiotics could cause a herx. That would mean that they are killing off enough bugs to elicit an immune response. Is that possible? But I am open minded, if anyone could show me how this happens.

And if it is from the die-off of yeast, then why are there no medical accounts AIDS patients, who are riddled with fungus, herxing from the massive anti-fungal therapy they take.

Hi Radha,
It is difficult to differenciate an allergic/adverse reaction from a herxheimer reaction. Tow question that may help differientiate. How soon after do you get the symptoms? And what are the symptoms?

If you notice something immediately after ingesting the supplement then the likelyhood is that it is an adverse reaction. It takes time for any medication or supplement to affect your immune system and result in a die off.

I have had to examine all my supplements, fortunatley with a doctor, for allergins such as wheat, corn, soy, yeast, and artificial colorings.

I read an article somewhere, probably a link given in a post on this forum, that stated that fungi (yeast is one) produce mycotoxins. And I think later in that article it said you could experience some herxing when fighting Candida.

Use the search and look through the posts for "yeast".

Nomoremuscles -- this is *not* a flame, but a friendly discourse [Smile]

I don't think that lack-of-evidence is proof of much in terms of scientific literature -- all it means is that no one has published an article about a given subject -- that doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

There is a lot, tons of anecdotal evidence of people experiencing die-off reactions to yeast treatment. I've had them myself. I don't know if AIDS patients get them or not -- perhaps their immune systems are too compromised to react to the die-off? Or perhaps they get them, but no one has isolated that as the cause of symptoms?

In any case, it might be worth trying out different probiotics to see if there is a certain one that doesn't upset your system -- I, for example, cannot take Theralac.. it upsets my digestive system fiercely! I'm just fine with most of the other probiotics, though.

I believe that in some of us, our systems get so sensitive that even the tiniest amount of anything can cause symptoms... others (like myself, thankfully!) can take even the harshest meds with little or no ill-effects. My mother (CDC positive but refusing to do anything about it) has the hardest time with meds and supplements -- she gets every side-effect in the book, and more! I, on the other hand, have been taking Ketek and Mepron without any problems at all (aside from the predictable ketek herx) -- but no drug side effects at all. We're all different that way.

My opinion is that it might be worthwhile to try taking miniscule amounts of probiotics or whatever you are wanting to take, then working up verrrrry slowly, and see if you can tolerate them that way -- seems to work for some folks.

cripes! I didn't realize probiotics could upset your stomach. How is it that this happens? Just from yeats die off?

I have so many stomcach issues, I wonder if the probiotics are too harsh?

What symptoms do you have that let you know you can't tolerate certain probiotics?

i dont get a reaction instantly, its hours later, and a worsening of symptoms i already have, so i was thinking it was a herx, this happens with 1/4 teaspoon of colostrum powder too, i hate being so sensitive, does that mean i have a high high load of bugs? that i herx so so easily? thanks for all your help
