I had an LP done a couple months back and everything was normal except the WBCs were high.
I was so relieved that there weren't any MS bands that I never followed up with neuro to see why the high WBCs.

He told me that it was an infection but not active, post-viral.

Could this be the Lyme infection? I believe I was infected 20+ years ago and it has been dormant until about 2 years ago.

Anybody familiar with the spinal tap and results?
Thanks for the help-
tic

It could be caused by a lot of things. Blaming it on a virus is the easy way out. Additonal testing should be done to rule out nothing else is going on.

So glad the LP did not indicate MS.

I'm not a dr, but I recommend -
If you have, or have had, enough symptoms to suspect Lyme (or other Tick-Borne Diseases), you should be evaluated by a Lyme Literate Med Dr - ASAP.

The LLMD will consider all diagnoses, not just TBDs.

If you haven't done so, start a notebook & record any symptoms & medical changes with dates. Get copies of all lab tests you've had done.

If you've had antibiotics for any reason, did your Lyme-like symptoms change?
...either better or worse.

cbb,
Thank you for taking the time to respond and for your advice.

My appt with a LLMD is on 9/6. I have been to 5 neuro docs and have had countless tests run but, remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Yesterday I was able to get myself a script of Zith max and took 2x250mgs yesterday and 1x250 today (so far) and my Lyme like sxs feel somewhat better.

So it may be a coincidence or it's actually helping.................WTH....what have I got to loose?? I cannot live like this anymore and I won't.

In Your position I would
ask for the WBC type breakdown. The ratio of the WBC types can give a indication of bacterial or viral infection. Lymphocites usually go after the viruses where the the others cells go after the bacteria. Result may vary, but this general rule may provide a bit of an idea what is going on. In either case unless the infection is active you should not have an elevated WBC count.

In my opinion, even though you may still have Lyme, I would also consider a co-infection as being the cause. I suggest this as "chronic" lyme usually does not show anything in the CSF, whereas some of the other infections do.

Have you done a Lyme IgM Western Blot, If I were you I would also do that as a positive IgM can indicate that the lyme infection is again active.

Hope this is of some help.

My sugestion is to call the lab that did the spinal tap. See if the fluid is still in storage -- different labs keep blood and other fluids for various amounts of time.

If they still have the sample, see if you can't have some additional tests run. Maybe have MDL or IGeneX test for various tickborne diseases. Not sure what other tests might be of use.

David,

Thanks for responding to my post. I do remember the neuro saying that the high WBCs were lymphocytes. Not sure if that means viral but, he definately said infection was "non-active." I would ask him for clarification but, really don't want to speak with him again.

Bea,

thank you. I will look into this suggestion. I am trying to get authorization from my Pcp to get WB from Igenex. If lab has my CSF specimen maybe I will order this test from Igenex as well.

The more reading I do here on Lymenet, the more I am convinced I am dealing with an untreated TBD of some kind.

Thank you again for taking your precious time to respond.
