I found this at a Fibro/Gulf War Illness site that was talking about mycoplasma infections.

Here is the link to the whole article: http://www.rense.com/general3/chemill.htm.

Here is an excerpt below. It is a remedy to reduce the severity of herxheimer reactions:

Herxheimer Reaction

A Herxheimer reaction occurs from the organism die-off. The dead organism triggers the immune system to respond to toxins given off in the dying process.

Since our immune system is already overactive, the cytokine production will be stimulated. The already elevated cytokines (such as interferon, interleukin, tumor necrosis factor, etc.), are the cause of most of our symptoms, anyway.

So, when they are stimulated even higher by the die-off, all of our usual symptoms will worsen.

Symptoms that are associated with a Herxheimer are the following: chills, fever, night sweats, muscle aches, joint pains, mental fog, and extreme fatigue. (Sound familiar?)

You may want to plan on doing nothing for the first week or two of treatment. Also, keep plenty of pain medications on hand, arrange for a massage therapist, have a Jacuzzi handy, and alert the family that you will need plenty of rest, space, and tender loving care during this time.

If the Herxheimer is too severe, many people have eased the symptoms with Whole Lemon-Olive Oil Drink (see recipe below.) Taken every day, this drink helps the lymph glands to filter and move the dying organisms.

Drink at least two quarts of fresh, filtered water every day to flush the organisms from the body.

Whole Lemon-Olive Oil Drink
1 whole lemon---washed and blended until smooth
1 cup of juice or water added to the blended lemon
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil---blended with the lemon (Montolivo
is the best brand)
Pour through a wire strainer
Discard pulp and drink liquid

Actually there is a lot of science behind this remedy. The olive oil is an anti-inflammatory as are all good fats. The combination stimulates the gallbladder to release bile which is where many toxins are stored. The lemon peel has d-limonene in it. This is an antioxidant which stimulates both phase 1 and phase 2 detox pathways I think.

To make this work even better make sure to get enough fiber so the bile won't be reabsorbed. Hubby usually takes 2 or 3 activated charcoal capsules with this drink before bedtime.

I did this years ago and remember it felt good.

should you do it at night as SBL suggested or in the morning? I am thinking I will take it and then some psyllium.

Hi everyone,

I used lemon essential oil when I was sicker, which is one of the constituents in lemon peel, that also has d-limonene in it, and that worked well to treat the Lyme disease itself.

I also felt that it helped to detox my liver at the time, but I didn't link it to perhaps reducing the severity of herxes at the time.

I found this herxheimer remedy interesting, because it is another example of a remedy that has natural essential oils in it as a component.

If anyone has a chance to look at the whole article I linked to, it is also very interesting.

People with fibromyalgia are getting on the bandwagon with using long-term antibiotic therapy for their condition. It also has a lot of good information on mycoplasmas, which are a co-infection for many people with Lyme.

Is there a substitute that can be used for lemon? I'm sensitive to lemon and it makes me nauseous.

Aniek,

Not positive about this, but if lemons are a problem then I think I would try limes as a 2nd choice.

Thanks Bea. Amazingly, I'm ok with limes. But I accidentally ate chicken marinated in lemon tonight, and my system isn't so happy now.
