i have gained from 128 to 197!!! egads.. i am miserable. i don't know if the joint pain and difficulty breathing is from all this weight or not.

i'm sure part of it was the elavil which i just stopped.

so how do i loose the weight? can't exercise as i just hurt too much. and doctors flat out refuse to give me any sort of appetite suppressant or anything.

anybody got any ideas????

Follow the yeast free diet. That should do it.

Have you had your thryoid tested? Lyme can cause hypothryoid, which slows metabolism. Thyroid meds will then increase the metabolism again. I am NOT recommending taking thryoid meds to diet. That is a very, very bad idea.

Some form of exercise is very important to reducing pain. I know it can seem impossible. I was in constant, severe pain for years. But not using muscles and joints can actually increase pain.

The key is to starting very slowly. I worked first with a physical therapist. First on light stretching then on light strengthening. He would work on my muscles before the exercising and then we would use heat.

Then I returned to yoga, which I had done a little before. It took months for me to not have severe pain the next day. But I stuck through it.

Now I'm in more pain when I don't do yoga. Yoga is so helpful with pain because it moves every joing, muscle and tendon in the body. It also detoxes the body and improves the circulatory system.

I'm not saying go out and do a 90 minute yoga class. You may start with 5 minutes. Maybe you can find a physical therapist who specializes in people with pain.

The yeast free diet should help. When I was first sick and didn't know it was Lyme I gained and gained as I had gone from running and being very active to being in pain and doing nothing.

It hurt and the extra weight made it worse. I followed the anti-inflammation diet which is basically no sugar, no refined carbs. I did lose.

I also would suggest trying to get into physical therapy. I started back in the heated therapy pool up to the shoulders for range of motion exercises and progressed to light weights and now pilates and walking.

Exercise can help with pain and weight. You do need to do it slow and careful.

Good luck!

Make sure you are getting enough chromium. When I started a mineral supplement that supplied the chromium RDA, I lost ten pounds. And I'm in the "spread years," not the lean ones.

I knew someone who was on elevil (sp?) It is well known for weight gain.

My best advice to loose weight is Eat right and drink water. I completely understand being too sick to exercise... if ya cant ya cant.

Best wishes

Hi geniveve

I slowly gained 50lbs over the 17 years I have had Lyme disease. No diet I tried in the last 6 years worked until I tried the low glycemic diet. Since being on it I have lost 15 pounds in 10 weeks - which is a MIRACLE for me. Many people with long-term infections can develop insulin resistance which can result in dramatic and stubborn weight gain. In a nutshell say good bye to rice, potatos, bread, pasta, cereal, donuts etc. You can have these very occaisionally with a well balanced meal - but do not have these items by themselves. There are several good sites explaining insulin resistance (syndrome X).

You need to do light exercise along with this dietary modification. I walk about 2km back from work 3x a week, plus lots of stairs.

Good luck - it takes will power but once you lose the first 10 pounds it becomes much easier. This is not the Atkins diet - although it is based on the same principles. I have a lot of fresh (non starchy) fruits and vegetables, lean meats (usually chicken and fish), fresh green drinks every day, nuts and a low-carb dessert about 2x a week. I don't eat after 7pm either.
