Since last night I noticed my stools are oily. \

The first thng I thought of was pancreas or malabsorption. Not sure if I'm on the right track but am wondering if anyone knows whats going on?

I just started taking Biopure garlic. That's the only thing I can think of that is different. I also went to a friends house for dinner Thursday and we had very grasy tacos and an italian salad that was loaded with homemade italian dressing.

Sounds like gallbladder to me. You may be having trouble digesting fats. Try a broad spectrum digestive enzyme with your meals and see if that helps.

Hi tickalert,

Have you just started a low carb diet? Sometimes that can cause it. When I did the atkins diet, my stools were like that the entire time.

Could any of your meds be causing this? Did you start any new ones recently? Rifampin does some strange things to stools.

If it goes away, I would just blame it on the salad dressing though. It sounds like the likely source..

Regarding the oily stools, you may want to inquire about fat malabsorption - this can be evaluated with a quantitive fecal fat test which can be discussed with your physician. I would also test for chronic pancreatitis which can lead to malabsorption and fatty stools.

Biliary tract obstruction, cholestatic liver disease, and bacterial overgrowth can also lead to maldigestion problems. Small bowel mucosal disease or surgical resection of the small bowel, gluten-sensitive enteropathy (celiac sprue) are also common causes of malabsorption in the United States. Whipple's disease, tropical sprue and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome are less common conditions that can lead to malabsorption.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

If stool "swims" or "floats" in the toilet water, more than just occasionally, it's fat malabsorption.

Urine has to be deep colored and smelly (especially the first in AM) and stool has to sink.

That's what I was taught by my doctor as one of the quickest signals for action needed.

Take care.

Thank you everyone. Stools haven't floated since doing the Dr. Natura cleanse a while back.

I'll follow up with my doc next week.

Could also be a sign of celiac disease.
