HI,
My doctors office called today and said my magnesium levels were very low and wants me to come in for an IV.

I was just diagnoised with lyme this summer and am still learning. I read that lyme causes low magnesium level.

I was wondering if someone could tell me what vitamins out there are good for low magnesium? Are there certain brands better than others?

This is very concerning to me. The nurse said they don't typically see the level I had very often.

I guess this explains why I am having so many muscle twitches.
Thanks,
Marcie

YEA!!! You get IV Mg...

A Meyer's cocktail, I hope (it includes the B vitamins which work in "concert" with Mg).

LUCKY YOU!!!! I'm not kidding.

The "pump" needs priming.

The muscle cramps are due to 2 things...low Mg AND too much acetylcholine which triggers calcium to go into the cells to cause the muscles to contract.

Then they are SUPPOSED to relax...which is where Mg comes into play.

Timing is critical and the KIND of Mg makes a difference.

I wish this was the ONLY nutrient that is impacted in lyme, but it is NOT.

The rebalancing is tricky...very.

Keep your antioxidants up...all of them.

Vitamin C only stays in the system about 2 hours...so SMALL doses more often.

Vitamin E is extremely important and we KNOW (pubmed) that it drops in lyme. Vitamin E works in "concert" with selenium and needs to be taken with meals. How much is the tricky part.

The list goes on...

Go for it! You likely will have some diarrhea as a result. If so...be SURE to take some loading doses of GOOD probiotics after. With diarrhea, we lose some of the "good guys" (beneficial bacteria that help us to absorb and actually make several nutrients for us).

P.S. Your Mg level is low because it is THIS mineral that the body is using as a DEFENSE for many, many reasons.

Just wanted to chime in that the effects of the IV are pretty immediate. Go for as many as they suggest and ask about doing supplemental IM Magnesium shots. When you are low, no level of orals will bring you back up, no matter how much or how often you think you are taking it.

IV's work. Marnie knows what she's talking about.

Thanks Julie and Marnie for the info. Looks like I have an afternoon of sitting on the toilet ahead of me. What fun! I am wondering what my follow up treatment will be. If I have to do them weekly or do shots. My doctors office is a few hours away so hopefully they can give me something to bring home.
Thanks again,
Marcie
